Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | As I am older and have gotten hurt a lot, Iโm seriously feeling the need/desire/security of running one handed. I read the Celie Ray article that said she trained her horses that way. QUESTION IS: how do I do that? Train for that? Are there experts ( or amateurs!) who can help me? Can you refer me to books, articles, people or videos to help me in my quest?
I have a 2 yo Iโm starting now, sheโs green, and not been tainted by my old 2 handed ways...What do I need to know... thank you SO much ?? |

Location: South Dakota | This is something I struggle with as well, I think it is a matter of trying to ride one handed more often, and help out 2 handed as needed. It's hard, as I love riding 2 handed, but as speed comes around the barrels, the horses rely on the 2 hands, and when it is taken away, it's like they go "What"? Bo Hill is the queen of one handed riding, so she would be a good one to check out, on her methods. |

Location: Southern Indiana | Dena Kirkpatrick learned a lot from celie and she gets her horses to where they ride off inside rein, inside leg. She had some good training videos. I learned a lot from them. I know celie also used the wire over the pole loomis gag.
Itโs really all about teaching shoulder control and getting them to work any direction off the inside rein and leg! It takes time and persistence. |

Two year olds need to be started well and have the foundation put on with mainly two hands. After theyโre broke nicely you can just start using one hand and help them out with 2 hands as needed. Use your leg to help them move off rein pressure. Get them good at counter arcs and moving off rein pressure and the transition will be pretty easy.
Iโve started horses on the pattern for people that ride one handed but I always start out two handed and gradually transition to 1 hand.

Location: Deep South | Bo Hill is the first to come to mind for me also. She has a couple of videos available on youtube. I'm pretty sure I remember her discussing it one of them, sorry I can't remember which one specifically. |

| Sometimes a horse will spook or ever off and I like to run two handed between the barrels to balance my horses shoulders coming into the barrel. I know one lady who had a well trained very patterned old horse that ran 1 handed the whole way. Must have took years to train. |

Location: Canada | I think if you were planning to go one handed a two year old is probably going to be a long road. An easier way would be to find a seasoned well broke horse (doesn't have to be barrel broke) that is responsive to leg could be taught to go one handed. This way you're simply guiding with the hands and your leg is moving and shaping the horse.
Riding one handed requires more coordination simply because you now have both sides of the face (there is no release on the outside rein) so as your horse turns you need to be careful you're not boxing them in or holding them back. They'll have to be maneuvered simply on leg pressure alone. Otherwise you'll have lots of turns where you're pulling over and the horses head is cocked sideways and you'll start shouldering those barrels or they'll start leaping out.
If you decide to go with your young one you may have to start them two handed as you start seasoning them and all the scary monsters come out in the arenas. With all the distractions in the arena they'll likely need the guidance of two hands.
Best of luck |
