| Apparently it's winter already here in Canada.
Do you guys have tips for training in winter, exercises to do on slippery ground etc.
I have no indoor or outdoor arena so things to do on snow for training would be great!

| I am trying to decide if I want to keep going on my 2 and 3 yo that I just got started or just turn them out. It’s cold and already snowed here... I was hoping for a long, warm fall! I’m not ready to start hauling indoors just yet ): | |

Location: MN | I put "snow shoes" on my gelding. A rubber pad lining the inside of the shoe and then studs into the actual shoe. Unfortunately, he cant go without front shoe's so when I got these and could actually ride all winter, it was super nice! Makes a world of difference on slippery ground. Plus it's nice not having to worry about snow balling up in the hoof when I'm riding in knee deep wet snow. The studs arent too big either so if I feel like making a pass thru at an indoor arena, they dont hinder anything!

Also, you're from Canada LOL. Tell me what you wear while riding that's not too bulky but warm!!!

| Hey! Thanks for the replies.
So I was wondering what you guys do, just out of curiosity.
Usually I do a lot of workouts along the side of the road, long trotting.
In the snow, I do a lot of collected work and body control.
We get a lot of snow (over a meter) so I pack a space down as soon as the snow falls.
Sometimes I lunge them too.
I wear insulated english riding pants, wool shirts (icebreaker typically), a sweater, and a long riding shell (like an oil slicker). I wear synthetic boots like riding Muck boots or winter riding boots.

I'm in Northern MN so we get very similar(ish) weather. Unfortunately, I dont have ditches to ride in and our road is too dangerous to ride on in the winter. Mainly me not trusting folks to slow down on a slippery dirt road. Lucikily, I have a huge field to ride in, so like you - when snow falls, I try to pack down a path right away. Mainly long trotting and if its safe enough, some loping. I try to keep it straight lines though. Lots of walking and collection in the deep snow for sure.
Thanks for the suggestions on clothing! I see Cowgirl Tuff just came out with some insulated pants and I will definitely be owning a pair.

| I put borium on my horses shoes once it gets winter.... Little behind this year (central alberta lol)
I ride in the feed pens and out with the cows the most over winter. I've never had a horse go down just riding around with the good shoes on. I always ride my young horses in the feed lot and frozen pastures, really gets them aware of their feet and able to stand up on not perfect ground.
We have lots of land so I just ride in fresh snow lots too, its not usually icey in the fields there that's where I work circles and such.

Hey! Not all of AZ is nice riding thru the winter.
We may not get a meter, but we will likely see pretty decent snow fall this year. I tend to do a lot of lunging in the deeper snow, as long as the ground underneath isn’t frozen. I’m hoping to keep “borrowing” my dads tractor thru the winter so I can keep the ground somewhat loose. Horses typically keep shod throughout the year because we haul south to run. The balling up isn’t fun to keep up on though. May try cooking spray this year.
As far as bundling up... I just freeze regardless! Lol! Hubs bought me a heated jacket last year, and that definitely helps, but I need heated pants now...

Gosh where in AZ are you located? The desert can get really cold, I just don't have to deal with the snow. The day temps are usually in the upper 60's low 70's..but it's chilly at night.

Ya Flag can get pretty cold and the winter's seem to last forever up there, lol. We have a cabin in Happy Jack, only use it in the summer time, too cold for me in the winter!

I don't have an indoor- I have a smaller area I can lunge in that is helpful but as far as riding, I go down the road. And I do my circle work in fields full of fluffy snow. I think my horses are actually in the best shape over winter!

| My husband will be working at the local sale barn this winter, so they’ll get used once a week there, which will be nice.
Our hay field is reasonably flat so I’ll ride on and off out there. I find carhart bibs to be the way to go when I’m just conditioning.
Ours get a pretty decent chunk of downtime. After the first of the year I’ll start riding more depending on the weather. The first race I usually shoot for is the end of March so I’ll start trying to be more consistent around feb 1.
