question about moving with livestock brands

Has anyone gone through the process of moving to a different state and re-registering your brand with the new state? How does that work? I would like to get a brand approved for my current state, but I know I will be moving to a state later on that has more strict branding approval regulations and I am worried my brand might not be able to be registered with the more strict state later on. Can you just change addresses but keep your brand registered with your original state?

some states might already have the same brand or one too similar to be able to register it. WY is a tough one. It's hard to even create a new brand here. Your best bet would be to contact the new state's Livestock Board and go through the steps. It's been awhile since I have looked into it here, but I believe it is around $300 to apply and send in the form. They look it over and get back to you. If it isn't approved they refund the money.

That's what i'm worried about, I don't want to have to change brands later on or not have my established brand not be able to be registered. the state I will be moving to is MT and they are also very difficult to get a brand approved. I can't go through the process of getting my brand approved with MT yet as I do not physically live there or I would just go ahead and register with both states now.

You might be able to add to your brand you have now to make it work. Add a bar or rocker? Just an idea.

Have you checked into getting a MT brand? I have a brand in a different state then which I live in. I don't use the brand but I still have it registered. I also have a brand in the state I live in. I would contact MT brand office and get a list of available brands and then pick one and also see if you can register with the state you are in right now....

MT brand laws are very strict and a brand cannot be anything close to what someone else already owns that lives in surrounding counties. Also it is illegal to brand livestock in MT with a brand registered in another state and notbregistered to you in MT.
Your best bet is to wait until you move to MT and know where you are living. I wouldn't count on getting the brand you have from your current state when applying. We tried to buy a family brand back that had expired. They wouldn't sell it back to us because someone who lived 250 miles away owned a similar brand in the same location and the 5 in our old brand conflicted with the S in the other people's brand.

To add on to this post, in Montana you are no longer allowed to create a new brand, you have to choose from an already existing brand that has been relinquished and is no longer registered to anyone.

We have ours registered in Texas and in Oklahoma for cattle, horses, and other livestock. We have to renew every so often but haven't had a problem yet. We own land in both States....
