Quick question for people who have raised stallions or owned and sold them. Have you ever collected and kept lets say 20 straws of frozen for yourself for down the road? How does that work if lets say 5 years from now I want to breed one of my mares by using said frozen straws and the said stallion has maybe changed owners a time or two? Do I have to get permission for owner of the stallion at that time?

Is it common to sell stallions and keep a few straws for yourself? How on earth do you deal with AQHA on something like that.

You can keep as many frozen straws as you want. But what matters is the number of frozen semen permits you obtain while you still own the stallion.  Once he is sold, you can no longer obtain the permits.  Just and fyi, a normal breeding dose of frozen semen is 8-16 straws.  A normal collection will produce 60-80 straws per collection.  So I would keep at least as many come from a single collection and order more permits than I think I would need.

Thank you so much for helping me with this Whiteboy
I assume I get the permits through AQHA then? Also when selling stallion I am sure I need to disclose this as well? Does it hurt the value of the stallion by keeping straws on him?

Yes through aqha.  It would be nice to disclose it but not required.  Hurt value- not unless you retained a lot and you use it on junk mares.   I just bought a young stallion and the seller wanted to retain some frozen semen, and I was more than happy to accomodate, as she has some very nice mares.

What was that rule. No pics and it didn't happen? Give it up.

He’s in TX and hopefully headed to OK this weekend. So once I see him I’ll be sure to post some pics.
