Location: The best kept secret in TX | Best Buy. Make sure you tell them exactly what you'll be using it for. College students mainly take notes and do research so they don't need a fancy processor or large hard drive. They can get by with a $200 laptop. People who run certain software, have large email accounts, or who work from their laptop need a faster processor and a larger hard drive. Think Macbook or Macbook Pro. Just make sure you tell them exactly what you will be doing, even if it's just once to make sure you get the right internals. |

Location: South Georgia | The last 2 times I have purchased one, I found what I liked at Best Buy after researching and looking around, and then I looked on Craigslist for one. $200 for $600+ laptops someone was just updating. The second one didnt have a single file stored on it at all. Military guy had taken it on one deployment to use Skype...that's it. I am a bargain shopper though. Craigslist has been my go to AFTER determining what specs I wanted. |

| Thank you for the replies. We did go to Best Buy and so far they are the cheapest. They have a sale going on. Do y’all get the insurance plans? |

| Not sure what you want it for primarily, but I'm a college student and I have a Surface Pro that is AMAZING. Hands-down, it's the most convenient and versatile computer I've ever used. The detachable keyboard is great because you can also use it as a tablet. The touch screen has no lag and is perfectly calibrated so when I'm drawing a ton of graphs during note-taking (economics major here) it's just as good, if not better, than drawing on paper. It's crazy fast and the battery life is pretty good. Also, it's light and isn't bulky so it's great to carry from class to class. They're a little pricier, but definitely worth it if you're needing a performance computer. I recieved mine as a gift, so I'm not sure where it was purchased from. |

Location: Louisiana | The last one I bought was from Best Buy. I told the guy what I needed it for, and he recommended a couple different models. Be sure to ask about any returns they may have. I got lucky and got one for $300 because a customer had purchased it and cut the tape on the box before returning it. The computer was still wrapped up and hadn't been touched! So while brand new, it was considered used.
I've had it several years now and it's still going strong. Its a Toshiba with the detachable keyboard and touchscreen (like a tablet if you take the keyboard off). |

Have you run a defrag and cleaned up your start up processes? |

My husband is getting me a laptop for Christmas, well for both of us. We have never had a laptop before. Any suggestions of any kind would be greatly appreciated!
Can I ask specifically what uses you want the laptop for? You might be better served by a large tablet. I have had laptops and tablets. I prefer my tablets to my laptops and with the right app (so long as you have a desk top) you can actually access your entire computer from your tablet and do exactly the same things. Overall I find my tablet much more portable and user friendly than my laptop. I almost never use my laptop. |

We don’t have a computer. I won’t be doing much on it. Shopping, Instagram, online video horse courses, keep cattle records on our small herd, that kind of stuff. |

No but I will try that. I don't really do enough on it that would warrant it. |

A tablet will do all that easily. Plus they have the new ones with the pencil where it is really easy to do handwritten notes and you can just get the keyboard attachment. I actually get my electronics lightly used on eBay all the time. Save a couple hundred bucks and have a pretty nice machine. That’s how I got my iPad. Guy had it like one month and decided he wanted the 12 inch instead of the 9. I have it 3 years now. It’s awesome. |

| I bought my current laptop from Best Buy back in 2011 for college. I was an accounting major, so my requirement was large screen and a number pad. I have a 15.6" Asus and it has been great ever since. I did not buy any insurance, as my husband is very handy with computers. And it was only about $400 at the time, and I was a poor college kid.
I still use this laptop even now. Less for homework since I'm not taking classes anymore, but now I use it to work from home (accounting) so having all the functions of a laptop to remote into my work computer and do accounting work is critical. |

| Dashnlotti, Tobishia, This is what I have it's 5 years old and still going strong. I got mine from best buy also. Mine is a little heavy because I have the stainless cover on it. My cousin who was military told me about these said they can go thru h*** and back and still work.

I have had 3 Toshiba’s and loved them. The one I have now is 8 years old and is ready to be replaced. Unfortunately, Toshiba no longer makes laptops.
I bought a HP that lasted 6 months. The warranty service is a joke. I would have been without a computer for at least 8 weeks. I ended up trading it in for the refurbished Toshiba I have now.
I bought one computer through Best Buy and the rest through Office Depot.
We can’t decide what we are going to buy next. It gets very confusing and overwhelming.
