Debating breeding an older mare (23yr) this coming spring.   Money is an issue.....shes very healthy, retired barrel mare, only carried two foals.....should I roll the dice and see if she'll carry one more or try ET?  Daughter of cash not credit out of a nonstop jet daughter.

If money is an issue, you can rule out ET. I would consider when was the last time she carried a foal. Personally, I like to live cover especially older mares but that might not be an option. I think it would be a gamble to get her to settle in foal due to her age.

I bred my mare at 24 years old. She'd had a few foals in earlier years. Took the first time and had a healthy baby. She did need to be flushed out after breeding as she was holding fluid, but besides that it was flawless. Glad I tried. Good luck!

Odd's are not in your favor...but you never know if you don't try.  That being said...don't try if you can't afford it if it doesn't work.

As others have said, can be challenging yet doable. First thing I would do is have her checked and make sure that she is still cycling before you attempt too much.
Have had some older mares catch into their 20's and have other mares that had shut down in their late teens.
Our older matriarch mare is bred to foal in the spring--she is 24.

ET is going to cost you about 4500-5000 each trip so financially idk if i would do it.

If you want to see, you can biopsy her before you try but, even if it’s a bad biopsy it doesn’t mean she’s infertile, so idk if that would stop me either. If I were you, I would try to breed her to carry and see. If you’re not having success then maybe consider ET

I took a gamble on a 22 yr old daughter of On A High. They sold her really cheap since she was open after they tried to ET her last spring.

WELL...turns out she's NOT open lol...she's carrying a Mighty B Valiant foal due in March and doing great.

So yes, older mares can get in foal...when you least expect it!
