I have a mare that has a spot on the inside of her hock that has bone remodeling. We injected and it has made it worse. I feel like her pain is coming from the actual bone injury. Has anyone had any one had any injuries with bone remodeling? What was the treatment and outcome?

Bone remodeling occurs after a break. Is she just not healed from the injury? Injections are great but they aren’t a “fix all” solution. Maybe “time” to heal is all this horse need. Just thinking out loud and throwing that out there as food for thought.

I think she was kicked at some point before I got her. She was running with mustangs when she was little. The vet told me fusing the hock would be best but I am not sure I agree. It seems her bone hurts he not her joint.

if you have a copy of the x ray that would be helpful. A lot of times bone remodeling can be a sign of joint disease but you cant see the surface of the cartilage on x rays to know... so bony changes are what you see.

Maybe look into Osphos but go to someone who know how to use! I have a horse that had bone cyst we did a series of injections 6 weeks apart and I xrayed every single time to make sure we was seeing results. after the 1st 6 weeks it was 25% better and the 2nd one 75% and then after the 3rd shot he was 90 something healed and then I had to bring him back slowly and strengthen his bones. good luck! I only did 3 shots

I didn’t even think to take a picture of the X-ray. She had slight narrowing of the joint space but the spot on her hock looked like a chocolate crunch bar. It was about nickel or so size.

my good mare has a angry bone on the outside pastern and I remember they said bone remodeling..................ugh we ultra sounded and injected and I have a 60 day appt. with another ultra sound on dec. 10th.  Not sure if its related but its frustrating.  because of the location she is not a surgery candidate too many tendons............. we think she kicked something really hard.  I don't know what when or why............... I'm praying for some clear answers next week.....................................

Where was the bone cyst?

left hock in actually the Tibia bone at the bottom. Hope that makes sense

Bone cyst is hollow looking on xrays. like a dark shadow. By the grace of God he didn't break it because I had been running him!

Thank you so much! My mare has one on her navicular bone so I'm still considering options. Maybe you responded to my earlier thread? Thanks again!
