So, got devastating news yesterday that our heeled has lymphoma. I'm considering chemo for her. Has anyone had any experience with this? She is eight and our world revolves around her. I am just sick.

My GSD had bone cancer and we amputated the leg with the tumor and did chemo. I canโ€™t remember how many rounds of chemo she had, but she was able to live a very happy additional 2 1/2 years. The chemo treatments were not really bad. They donโ€™t lose their hair or anything (it seems like everyone asked me that question!). She usually would be tired after her treatment and the next day, but then would bounce back and be her normal. She also didnโ€™t want to eat her kibble on those days, but we would boil chicken and she would eat that. Even though your dog will not lose a limb, I would recommend checking out www.tripawds.com for questions about chemo. That place and the community there helped us so much at the time. Also feel free to PM me, itโ€™s been about 10 years, so Iโ€™m sure a lot has changed, but Iโ€™m here for you!

Griz,
my sister's dog ( Rottie) had bone cancer the same as Phillyincal's had. She did do the chemo, pretty much the same as Philly's GSD. It did buy him another 3yrs with her. It wasn't too hard on him except for eating. Good luck and prayers. I tell everyone we don't own these special dogs they own us.

Our 13 year old terrier mix was diagnosed with Lymphoma (Thymoma, a tumor on the thymus gland)  in September.  We were very concerned about chemo treatment at first because of our experience about 20 years ago with another dog who although he went into remission and lived another year, the chemo was very hard on him and he was often very sick (lethargic, diarreah and vomiting) after treatments and we really questioned our decision. Our vet and a friend who is an RVT assured us that it is different now and  most dogs have very limited or no side effects. Based on that we went ahead and started chemo and haven't regretted it.  She's on the UW Madison (CHOP) protocol and has weekly treatments for 9 weeks, then every other week for 9 weeks. The only side effects she's had is a day or two of being "off" after treatments, depending on the drug because they rotate them each week, and a few times when chemo was delayed a few days because her WBC was low. Some weeks she has no side effects at all. Her quality of life has been excellent and we are very glad we went ahead with it.  She is happy and actually likes going to the vet's office!
