Hello, I have a super cow bred mare, whom I love dearly, but her confirmation is making barrel saddle fit next to impossible. I'm looking for recommendations on a saddle that would fit a short, flat backed horse with dips behind the shoulders but a broad chest, and not very pronounced withers. Any advice would be appreciated, i'm on a budget so a brand new custom saddle just isn't in the cards for me. I would love to find something used. So far there's an older martha josey with fqhb available, but i'm hesitant to buy one on line given the trouble i have had fitting her. Thanks in advance for your help!!

  Had the same problem. After trying countless saddles with month's of frustration we finally found one that actually fits. Burns!! From Burns custom saddles. Finally one that actually fits, doesn't roll, doesn't pinch, doesn't bridge, ect and is actually great to ride in and we tried EVERY saddle on the planet and multiple trees.

Like yours !

Do you have to shim any of them? I have a biofit pad that i usually put on her to help with the rounded shoulders, but it's tough. Shes the type of horse that will start to kick out if a saddle isn't fitting properly. She almost dumped me a few of our trial runs haha. She seemed to like the circle y flex2 but that was a trail saddle i had, and she turns a barrel so quick and really launches out of a turn, that thing just didn't hold me in well enough. always felt like i was going to go off the back.

Nope no shimming needed. I use a thin saddleright pad and Im a guy so not tiny. LOL Fits great, no soreness. My horses both have round shoulders and flat backs.

I bought a brand New Reinsman at first, then when I needed a second saddle for my other horse I looked for used and found a great deal on a Cactus CJ that is a few years older. Leather is def different but the saddle fit is the same. I have heard " Cactus" made the best saddle of hers but i don't have an issue with the reinsman either. Felicia at www.horsetackworld.com is a wealth of knowledge and has just about every saddle known to man in stock.

Thank you Roxie!
I am so thrilled I found this board. It seems like everyone is very knowledgeable and willing to help. I actually have been looking at some used saddles today and came across a double J Charmayne James saddle that is priced well below any other double J i have found. Its the wide tree so i'm thinking I will give it a shot and see how my horse likes it. If it doesn't fit, then I will sell it and continue the search!

LOL, we can get quite entertaining at times so beware, just warning you . Theres alot of smarts on here and I have learned alot from other Board Buddy's {BB}
I have bought and sold saddles myself trying to find the right fit for me and my horses, sometimes you hit the jackpot right off and sometimes you have to go threw more then a few to find the right saddle, so good luck to you and Merry Christmas..
Just wanted to say that your avatar picture is so cute of you and your horse. .

I have a cowbred mare and I have two saddles that fit her great, one a Cactus Charmayne James Record Breaker 7.5" gullet (best saddle ever) and I also have the Double J Pozzi Pro #10 wide, it fits her great as well. I ride both saddles with a 5-star 7/8" thick pad. Never an issue!! The Record breaker I ride in every single day, and the Pozzi I only race in. The horse is my Avatar with my Record breaker on. I have tried a Jeff Smith C3 wide and it did not fit her at all!!
