Who has them and what can you tell me about them? Thinking of getting one for our catahoula and dachshund when we move to our new property. It’s several acres but we’d probably only want them running on the few acres around the house.

The dachshund is deaf so if you can recommend a brand that vibrates before shocking that would be awesome.

The bad thing is, if your dog happens to get out, he’s coyote bait :-(

Personally I would have a fenced in backyard for your dachshund, especially with him being deaf.

We had good luck with the wireless collar that creates boundary line no digging required. You can expand the distance with using multiple bases too. Ours is one by Safepet.

I agree a fence would be better for the little winnie..

He is coyote bait even if he doesn’t get out because the coyote can still get to the him but the really bad deal is if he does run out he won’t come back in by the house because of the shock.   I have a friend whose dog got attacked in the yard and carried off,  he got away but wouldn’t go back up to the house, they were lucky to find him before he died from his wounds.

My friend had one for her Chi's and Boxer. They would get out but be afraid to come back across so they stood out on the road. She fenced her yard instead

We just installed a PetSafe for our 9 month old lab mix.  We LOVE it.  She totally respects it and was quick to learn her boundaries.

We had a really bad experience with one that shortd after an electrical storm....the collar had been zapping our Dalmatian continuously for several hours before we found out. That experience sourd me on them.

We didn’t have great luck with a one acre electric fence.

We had two Aussies.

The older one (by 2 years older than the other) didn’t even have to get ‘zapped’ when it was installed. It gave her the ‘beeping’ sound and she stayed way away. She never did ever try that fence. However, the other younger one learned (in less than a month) that if she flew off the deck and just ran like crazy through it, it was no big deal. BUT, it was a BIG problem to get her back through it to get her home after she was chasing cars, bicycles or joggers. I usually had to pick her up (50lbs.), remove the collar and carry her back across the yard.

So, for the next 3 years, one got to go out free and the other had to be on a leash.

That fence was really kind of pointless.

I have the Petsafe boundary type, that emits a signal to the collar.  It will keep zapping them for (I think) 1/4 of a mile if they test it. It does beep before it zaps. It's great for big dogs, but for the little ones, I prefer a fenced yard.

I have the sport dog brand.  We fenced in 2-1/2 acreas and love it.  My heeler respects it and never crosses the line.  He won't even cross it when his collar is off.  He is home to roam while we are at work.  We have it set up so he can go thru his dog door into the house garage.
