Canada to the United States - importing a horse

Tell me the ins and outs that you have learned on this process. I have learned about needing a broker if a commercial vehicle hauls him across - if the legal owner hauls him it is fairly simple and free. I have learned about needing a vet appointment.
The horse has all the required health and coggins already so anyone have any advice or tips?
I am about 13 hours from the border and have a passport - how much less hassle is it if I go get him versus trying to find someone? Thank you!

I have brought a few across... One I went up to get. All the paperwork was done. The owner just had me tell them I was bringing the horse back for training. The paperwork wasn't in my name. the other three I have purchased the seller crossed them.. Stating they were coming down for training as well. It's all been no hassle.. There isn't a vet apt required if you tell them you own the horse and are on your way home and all your paperwork is in order. However, if you tell them you are importing it becomes a different matter. The very easiest way is to have seller cross it.

Importing a horse is actually pretty easy to do legally. Purchase the horse and get the required export paperwork. This would include an international health and coggins
(within 6 months
). Make an appointment on the US border with the Federal Vet as they will need to stamp your paperwork and provide an "inspection". Stop at the border, pay a fee of approximately $45.00 per horse and have the Federal Vet process you thru. Waaalaaaa. Done.
