So I currently up in Idaho, and my husband is active military. He recently came home from deployment and we were planning to start a family, but things didn't quite work out as we had planned. We are still in the works of trying to come up with a plan B, which is looking like we won't try again for another year and a half or so.. mainly because he is looking at some going away time, and I do not want to be pregnant by myself. I just don't think I'm strong enough to handle that, and he will be home for a good amount of time after his next deployment.

I'm currently wrapping up grad school (less than one semester) and my original plan was to start a family, take a little time off from work, then in like 2-3 years buy a horse. By then my career would be kicking off, and finances should be overall good, and I would like to get a truck and trailer, so I can haul and get me a nice 3/4D finished horse that I can just enjoy. I currently do not have a truck and trailer of my own.

Well now that we are not starting a family right away, I'm looking at jobs right out of grad school(less than 3 months away). There are a lot of opportunities and I am chomping at the bit (pun intended) because now..I want to buy a horse a lot sooner than expected. I just don't know if I should wait a little bit and then buy one, or wait till we relocate again which won't be till next year sometime. I really miss riding and I have tried to lease a horse, but it just did not work out and the barns around here are few and far in between and are SUPER picky about who they have come into their barn. I just don't want to deal with the people when it comes to leasing and lessons, my experience has been less than stellar.

Also, do we have any Idaho people in here? It seems hay is a bit scarce in this area?

In my experience of relocating with a horse is harder then you may a think. I would recommend waiting till you get settled. We relocated about 6 months ago and my horse stayed at my dads for about two months. If I didn’t have my dad to keep him I don’t know what I would have done. Our house sold in 2 weeks with possession at closing and we didnt find another house for another 2 months and they would not give us immediate possession. So we lived in a hotel with two young kids and two dogs. Longest 2 months of my life. Thank heavens our new house already had fence up and ready to roll or it would have been longer before I could have brought my horse.

I'm in Idaho- twin falls area. I say buy a horse if that's what your heart is telling you to do! Lots of great barrel races in your area. I bet you can find a ride to races utilizing Facebook page of the producers. Lots of horse people have been at the stage in life where you are now and I'm sure if you start asking around, you will find those willing to haul- especially if your gracious and pay fuel. Pray about it, Make the decisions you find peace with and remember Where there is a will- there is a way!
Best of luck!
Edited to add- if you search hay on boise Craigslist- you'll find some options.

Thanks guys, so I spoke with my husband tonight about wanting to get another horse. I love him dearly, he not only said we can get a horse but he thought because I would prefer something finished he is prepared to spend 15K on one

Well.. I kindly told him, because I am not looking for a 1D horse.. more 3D/4D, maintenance is okay, a little older we probably won't have to dish out that kind of cash for one! lol But now comes time for me to do some research, such as boarding, farriers, what hay prices look like etc. And also I want to wait till I'm graduated and hopefully picking up a job so it's not all on him to pay for/provide for it, which will give me a couple months to browse and see what's out there, and what is available.

I am excited though.. just got my set back from Heritage brand, can't wait to use it! lol

Bennington,

I actually have moved my horse before. When I met my hubby, I moved states apart and I left my horse at a boarding facility out to pasture. But I knew everyone and I knew it was a good place, he was there for 2 months while I got settled, found out where the boarding was, and found a place. Then we went back and hauled him, I didn't mind so much because he was in a good place and also he was younger, so a break was not a bad thing. If I could have done something different, I would have paid someone to haul him across country but I had some serious trust issues when it comes to people hauling my horses without me there. Now I am a little more well versed on the subject, I know of some reputable companies I can call now. I had a gelding when I moved to Idaho and he was in training in Oklahoma, being seasoned for barrels, but I decided to sell him as I was in the middle of grad school, my internship, and didn't have a lot of time and couldn't afford to keep him in training (I had planned for 3-4 months but nothing beyond that).

thank you though for your input :)

That’s beyond exciting. I hope you find that perfect horse that fits your needs. I took a several year break from horses a few years back now. The feeling a horse gives you never goes away it seems to just be in your blood for good. I m so glad I bought my gelding when I did even though at some times it was tuff with the move.
