We purchased a new horse for my daughter to learn to rope on recently, hes 16 and in pretty good physical shape, hes at the perfect weight and has nice muscle tone. He was used daily by previous owners. He told me he fed him Nutrena (plain green bag) I dont even know what feed that is, never figured it out but my feedstore lady said it was part of their economy line of feed. He was feeding the horse roughly 8lbs a day and he added Nutrena topline balance(?) To it. He said that was the only feed this horse would keep condition on. Well, I dont feed nutrena, so hes on Bluebonnets Total advantage feed and getting 4lbs a day and seems to be holding steady, his attitude is right and his coat has noticeably improved since I got him home. My question is for topline supplement... I dont want nutrena anything .. hes ridden 5 days a week here and worked pretty good, be it roped on or condition work at home. Are feeds/supplements that are geared toward topline condition worth adding in or a waste.. just a good quality feed and good hay with a well rounded exercise program be sufficient? I do also feed forco once daily as well. This guy needs to last us and my hubby has started heeling on him as well so I want to keep in good flesh! Would THE MM be a good option?
We like Platinum. I think THE MM would be a good choice as well. You may also see results with just the Forco too.
One thing I’ve started learning more with regards to topline is saddle fit. There’s fit in the sense that it doesn’t sore them, but just because it doesn’t sore them doesn’t mean it’s allowing them to lift and use muscles and their backs properly. Under the guidance of our saddle fitter we’ve been learning and experimenting with some different pads (and eventually a new saddle when $$ allows) on him and it’s made a world of difference in his attitude and movement. I wish we’d learned such things earlier because I’m excited to watch his muscle and topline change with the adjustments - he’s always been our “hard keeper” and now I’m not so sure it’s feed related.
I would go with The MM works for my 30 year old.
I've priced out some other name brand topline geared supplements... i.e purina supersport and bluebonnet makes one as well and they arent inexpensive! But when I read the ingredients, I'm not seeing anything that really stands out either. Looks like a little extra aminos and then a bunch of fillers. That's why I was leaning towards something like MM. Also when I ride at home, I make my horses collect, get under themselves in our circles so i can feel them working their entire bodies not just staying flat for exercise sake. Honestly, I've never EVER had a team roper (former owner) tell me hes fed a supplement to keep his topline looking good lol!
