Have any of you guys ended up with a cryptorchid colt from a “normal” stallion and a mare that’s never had a crypt foal before? (Mare had 4 foals- all colts- 1 crypt

what the heck can this be from? Just random gene mutation and now he’s got a genetic thing he can pass on??

My uderstanding of cryptorchid is that it can be genetic, or it can be a defect. Not sure on the stats of percentages of each but I know of at least one of each. Actually, I know of one with no crypt in known genetic history and two that were from crypt sires or with crypt grandsires.

Thank you for the reply. My next adventure was to check all of the grand sires in the pedigree. I know the TB wasn’t and the other one in Frenchman’s Guy ????‍??

This dude has to be a defect. I don’t believe the stallion owner would lie about that & he’s seen in public a lot.

I have had 3 in 20 yrs. 2 were full siblings out of same mare. I am going to blame the mare. Her other babies were all fillies. The other 1 was not related in any way.

I had a vet tell me it could very well come from the dam's lines. She doesn't necessarily have to be by a crypt herself, but some kind of defect they carry genetically.

That’s honestly what I was thinking but all she’s ever had were colts and this is the first crypt. I personally assisted in gelding the last two and I was told the first one had both decended. Never say never but really? Colt #4 and it’s her fault ??

I've never had a crypt born to any of my mares and all of mine have had their testicles down when they were born.  So I can't really say. Some say genetic.  If it is genetic, it must have more than one gene or it's recessive.  It doesn't happen that often IMO.  I wish someone would study this, parrot mouth and navel hernias and settle this debate once and for all. I'm in my 60's and I know most stock horse breeders that were reputable in my era would cull for all three of the above.

Thanks for the reply. I agree! I wish there was some concrete info behind it. I don’t want to believe I’ve been lied to about what studs are/are not crypt but unless he’s a random mutated gene ????‍?? But to my knowledge there isn’t a cryptorchid horse on his papers :/

My sister did when she was breeding her own. Stallion wasn’t one nor did it run in his bloodlines. The mare had several foals by that stud and one colt was a crpyt. She bred to several mares for years and that colt was the only one.

That is a good idea. It would surprisingly eliminate a huge portion of the cutting/reining stallions...also some of the show stallions. And with shipped semen these days, few have any idea if a stallion has both testicles or a parrot mouth, hernias are fixed as babies so. Someone gets a buckskin son or daughter of DTF out of a top producing FWF mare, say it has a hernia. Not much chance it will sterilized for having a defect...

I went to the Reno Snaffle Bit futurity one year for the entire thing. I could NOT believe how many of those horses in the sale (yearlings) were offset in the knees, crypt, parrot mouthed or ??  Couldn't tell if they had hernias because they probably had them repaired.

TB breeders are pretty "forgiving" when it comes to those things too.  There are LOTS of big name TB stallions that are crypt, parrot mouthed and probably had navel hernias before they were repaired.

ETA: I remember fondly the days when you actually set eyes on horses and could look them over.  Now not so much.

Have you had a vet sedate your colt and thoroughly examine to make sure he is a true cryptorchid?

It's been accepted in the veterinary community that cryptorchidism is hereditary to some degree but gene mapping has not been done to determine what gene(s) and what chromosome(s) are responsible.  Soooooo, I advise to tread lightly before looking at pedigrees on who to blame.

I assume she gelded the crypt? I’d like to know if what that colt was would be considered genetic disorder that could be transferred or a gene mutation that couldn’t be passed on.

No. That is my next step though I have felt the poor guy up more than I’d like to mention and he’s crypt :/

On your blame comment, i 100% agree. Heck I want this horse to be a random mutation and NOT genetic lol. I have his brothers!

Of course she gelded him. She gelded all her colts before putting them up for sale.

Yeah I mean at 2 years old... its probably not coming down. But, if he's a high flanker the cost of your castration will not be near as much as if they have to go into the abdomen to get it out.
