I have read previous post about forage first, hay only grain free diets etc. I would like to switch over to a grain free diet. My question is if my horses have access to timothy hay (while inside) and pasture while outside..and I do alfalfa cubes/pellets for "feed" 2x a day.. what supplements/additives do i need to add to make sure they have a balanced diet if they arent getting any processed complete feed?
for those of you who do this, If they have access to hay/pasture all day, approx how many pounds per day do you feed of the alfalfa cubes/pellets. and which do you like better, the cubes or pellets. thanks in advance for any and all info!
Mine are on pasture all night, come in during day. My easier keepers get approx. 1-2 lbs of soaked alflafa/timothy cubes or pellets ( sometimes a combination) and a couple flakes of mixed hay. I do add groung flax - a 4oz scoop to each feeding, and 1oz of redmond fine salt. They each get individual supplement according to use. Lightly used do not get supplement. Harder keepers, young ones ect. I do add an extra fat supplement if needed for weight.
My two horses have pasture access and receive a flake or two of grass hay in the barn to munch at leisure when standing under their fans. I feed Nutrena Empower ration balancer. Both look great -- sleek and shiny. My gelding that has a highter metabolism and is younger receives 3/4 lb. of the balancer morning and night. My mare - who gets fat on air - receives 1/2 lb. morning and night. Since switching to forage first with the balancer, I've been able to pull my mare's shoes -- her hooves are better than they have ever been in the 13 years I've owned her.
edited to add: I do not feed alfalfa due to my gelding being allergic. It makes him cough. (The bay is 16 yo mare; sorrel is 7 yo gelding.)
Renew Gold, Redmond salt. fresh clean water. When hay quality is poor I up the alfalfa sourse and may add FORCO to aid in breaking down tougher hays.
I add Renew Gold or Enrich.
