What would you try for a horse with mild allergies? At home horse coughs once or twice during workout (riding in pasture not arena). At race coughs more I’m almost certain due to dust. Really just looking for something to give day of race but am open to options. Thoughts on Benadryl?

Thanks

Have you tried Air Power or Wind Aide prior to riding? You can also find Ani Hist or Cough Free at TSC.

I buy generic Zyrtec from Costco (Aller-Tec).  I give daily 1 pill/100lbs.  I then back off to see the lowest maintence dose.  My gelding is 14.2h / 1,000lbs and I can keep him maintained on 7 pills.  When pollen is high or air quality is bad I will bump up to 10 pills.

It is also not typically recommended (works for me and my vet is comfortable with it), but for large multi-day races where I know the dust will be high (indoor arenas with indoor stalls) I will give Dex once.

Oh - I will add I do use Su-Per Wind for events as well.

No which one do y’all prefer? Wind aid, air power, or cough free?

I give air power prior to events. You give less per dose than Wind Aid. Cough Free and any over the counter allergy medications did not work for my horses. I have used Smart Pak Breathe and Tri-Hist (vet script), which have both worked for me in the past.

I give Air Power at events just as part of my pre race protocol.

if I have one like you describe, I start with Cough Free because it’s affordable and easy to get.  If that works, and it has on several, great.  It’s been several years since I’ve had one that needed more than that so I’m sure there’s new products out there - I know Cur-OST, Oxygen, MVP all have products.  On one I had to go so far as to do allergy testing - the shots seemed to make a difference while he was stalled, but ultimately once he was turned out 24/7 he didn’t seem to have any troubles.

MSM is a good way to reduce inflammation, and can help horses with allergies.
