Have for years Well sorry guess I should have rephrased title. I have also done small circles but I dont warmup like they do and it looks like they are constantly doing it and that why I was wondering their reasoning. At first I didnt think much about it til I started seeing different videos from different people on the Brazians and barrel racing, which I know doesnt show everything they do. I have heard that you can put alot of wear and tear on joints by doing that but also I believe have to use it or lose it. Everyone has a reason for what they do. Always interested and watching what others do. I know it depends on horse too. In one video Shannon said that most horses are 1d and 2d not many in the other d's so of course I wanna learn why they do what they do tho I may not do it if it doesnt work for my horses. Just curious on everyone thoughts on it or maybe they already know and Im the dumb one for asking. Also I havent really seen anyone at the barrel races I been to warmup like they do.

You have a video to any of these warm ups? I'm interested to see it. Are you saying they quite literally ONLY lope small circles??? I searched the forum Shannon Kerr posts to on FB and I'm not finding it. But it's early and my coffee hasn't kicked in so it could quite easily be user error. |

There are no dumb questions! You asked it, and I'm sure someone else was thinking it. In one of Shannon's vlogs, she mentioned that the Brazillians have the mindset of, "the fastest way to one point is in a straight line," and that they pretty much want to turn on top of the barrel. That's why all of those guys are always smacking the barrel trying to keep it up, even when they didn't actually hit it. They are so accustomed to be so close to them that they do that to be "safe." I'm assuming since they run trying to be as close to the barrel as possible, that they want to warm up that way...? |

Location: South Dakota | My first thought, when I have seen the small circles, is how hard is this on a horses's stifles, hocks, SI? Maybe I don't get it, but it seems not a lot of fun for the horse, and hard on them. Can anyone enlighten me, as possibly I am missing out on the benefits? |

Not a dumb question, questions are how we learn. I think working a small circle is hard on the joints too, and even worst when the rider is heavy. But everybody has a circle thats just right to them while others may be thinking its to small. Never a dumb question, people that answer a question in a smarta** way just have it in their DNA, they cant be nice. |

Location: Oklahoma | Another vlog is a couple of Fallons on Youtube she had or has a brailizan that was or is riding for her and she at the warmup pen and you see him constantly doing barrel size circles or maybe a tad bidder the whole time she talking which is quite awhile. Then I started watching Shannons videos and I see them in the background doing the same thing even tho one was doing bigger circle but he went down to the small one. I did see a vlog by shannon that showed her trainer doing it and it was teaching it to cross over somehow with the legs (Cant explain lol) and then he goes another direction. I do understand them using it to teach them or to strengthen the hind end but just wasnt sure bout all that during warmup before they run and its quite a bit. I know they have a reason just really curious what! lol |

Not a dumb question. We all have a tendency to look around to see how others are warming up. If there is something that people in your area do not do you are never exposed to it. I always warm up with little circles but I don’t spring something new on my horse when I get to a barrel race. It is a part of my basics. I have been to more Josey Clinics than I can count. Just went to the Back To School Clinic. That is one thing they teach. I often wonder how many people actually go home and use that. Also just picked up a horse from the trainer and she said make sure you do small circles in your warm up. Small circles help your horse cross over in turns and flex their entire body. |

Here is an example of how we tend to do what others do and my favorite. A friend had an extremely nice mare that could win anywhere. After every run she would ride up in the alley during the next drag, loosen her cinch and remove her SMB’s and lead her horse out. Soon the alley was jammed with people doing the same thing. She also rode her horse to the barrel race—didn’t see anyone doing that though. She said it was too much trouble to hook up to the trailer! |

She must have lived relatively close to the arena to ride to the barrel race! |

the small circles are really more than they appear, they’re all about emphasis on the horse honoring the inside rein. They want them to be soft in not only the neck but the whole body with the rib cage bent and the hind leg stepping up and driving up under the horse. Out here, some trainers call them “wheels”. |
