I have a 31 year old gelding that is starting to lose weight as he can not chew his hay that well anymore, dentist said that if he did anything else to his teeth at this point he wont have any left. He has been on Safe Choice Senior for as long as I can remember, at least 6-7 years and before that he was on Equine Senior since he was about 12 years old. He has a tendency to choke. Currently he gets 1.5 scoops of SCS with alfalfa pellets and then DROWN it in water to soften it up, he literally slurps it up or he will choke. He eats in a low bin recommended by the vet and all this has worked just fine until this winter. He's not "skinny" but he's not exactly holding his weight as well as normal. What can I do for him that would help keep weight on him? I have tried soaked beet pulp before and he choked so I'm nervous to try that again. I was thinking rice bran and oil mixed into his "mash" to add fat and calories. Thoughts of ANYTHING I can add to his ration that will help? I really do not want to switch feeds, I know that Nutrena is not the most loved brand out there, but he's 31 and I truly just do not want to go the feed switching route unless absolutely necessary, also we have a limited number of options around here so it would need to be shipped in if I did. He's perfectly sound, happy and healthy in every other way, but I want to keep him looking good into the very wet, cold Feb-March timeframe around here. TIA!!!
I have a gelding that will be 33 in April. His molars are worn about to the gum line so he doesn't eat much hay. Thankfully no choke episodes thus far but started having trouble keeping weight on a couple of years ago. What works well for him is the senior feed (we love the texture of the Nutrena Pro Force Senior...softer and easier for him) And adding a product called Manna Pro Senior Weight Accelerator.https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/manna-pro-senior-weight-accelerator-8-lb
We also started adding a cup of the Purina Outlast as he was having a bit of chronic diarrhea. That change alone made a big difference.
I found out last night Bluebonnet feeds are now available on Chewy.com I highly recommend Bluebonnets Sr. Therapy feed for putting weight on one. Its soft, and will soak easily and dust free. You get free 1 to 2 day shipping over $49 and also a discount if you do autoship... I buy all my dog food thru them as well. So easy and super reliable. They carry the BB senior therapy feed, I added that to my autoship last night in fact for my old horse. Saves me from having to run into town and deal with all that. Plus their feeds are always ALWAYS fresh from Chewy and they have such good customer service. I've always been impressed with how easy it is.
Great, I will look into both of these options! Thank y'all :)
We had a 32-yr old that we could not keep weight on. He basically could not really eat grass/hay and had difficulty eating real feed. We started feeding him Wendlands One 'N Only. It has the consistancy of dog food and kind dissolves as they eat it. You can leave it out as a free choice food although we didn't do that. We would make a slush with beet pulp and water and he loved it. I don't know if it is available where you are located but I felt it saved our old man.
My 26 year old is getting Triple Crown Senior, alfalfa cubes 14 lbs a day and Equipride too dressed and looks amazing!
