Today is
I have a horse that is super super free running. She has SOOO much speed that she can freaking clock but she doesn't rate down like I would like. Granted I have only had her for a little bit so still trying to get the feel for things. But would like to know what kind of bits people use for powerful running horses. I was told by a trainer that rode her (very well known trainer) that he rode her in a curb and a shank, Which doesn't tell me a whole lot. But I have been trying different ones and just would like to know what other bits people have tried and liked. I don't think their is anyway I could run her in a hack. The bit I have now might just be fine and I just have to get my timing down. But would love to hear what Y'all like for free running go fast kind of horses lol.
I used a Charmayne James Grasshopper bit on my free runner. It has a locked mouthpiece so it has very instant, direct contact and offers good lift. The chain mouth piece encourages a lot of flexion, and the chain chin strap offers a ton of whoa and poll flexion if tightened up.
I like the Ed Wright Pretzel bit on my very strong free runner. Just a quick bump at each barrel and I get the rate that I want.
I like that if you ride with quiet hands, you're fine but it's there if you need it.
