I need some no nonsense easy to follow tips to learn to hustle a horse. can you "practice"hustling without working the pattern over and over? I typically never work the pattern on a finished horse. but hate not performing like we should on the weekend.its me that needs help not him.

Horse is a free runner but wont max out if he isnt told to. If that makes sense. 

Try smooching 

I pick my knees up a tiny bit to lock my butt in the saddle and then squeeze with my calves and kiss kiss kiss. It's easier to manage that between the barrels than a whip or over/under, for me at least. You can practice on a flat straightaway, going into speed mode for a few strides, then sitting up and asking for more collection. 

Breeze your horse 2-3 times a week until they just "give it" to you when asked.
