Who puts insurance on a living quarter trailer? I've always had non-living quarters trailer is in the past so I just don't know. I know when you're hooked to the truck you have some coverage I believe but I'm curious as to see who has a separate policy for their living quarters trailer.

We went through our agent who writes our farm policy and they added it to our auto coverage. Some companies will rate them as an RV. Liability only will extend from the power unit towing the trailer, but only when it's hooked on, and there would be no physical damage. Liability coverage is so cheap you might as well add it, so it's covered whether it's attached to the power unit or not. Physical damage is up to you, unless you have a lienholder, than most will require you add PD.

I have a separate policy for mine, it's $120 a year. State Farm. I have my truck and 2 trailers covered, $1000 a year for the 3, which isn't terrible. Its also bundled with my home insurance

I don't have a loan on it. So what would liability cover if something happened? I'm trying to spend my money wisely but I also would like to be covered if something happened. New to all this. I have full comprehension and collision on the truck that toes it. The trailer is parked at the barn I board at since there is no room at my house.

I would talk to your insurance agent for your truck, explain to them what it is and what coverage you want. Your policy will/should cover it in case someone hits it while its parked somewhere, if its damaged in a storm/fire/etc. Most are pretty cheap, like I said I pay $120 a year on mine and it's covered. I have a $500 deductible and it's also parked at the barn I board

So if the trailer was damaged in an accident on the road I would need full coverage on the trailer itself correct?

I've always used an independent agent for P&C. They sent our LQ insurance thru Grange. Grange was too high for my home insurance so we Ky National. But Grange was far better for the trailer.

Trailers that are licensed need to get a listed on an auto policy. A living quarters horse trailer usually gets rated as an RV/camper due to the bathroom and kitchen system. The liability will extend from whatever vehicle you are pulling it with while going down the road or the personal policy from whoever owns the trailer when it is parked. Liability will cover you in case someone else get hurts due to you or your property. You will want comprehensive and collision coverage in case your trailer is damaged in a storm or you back into something.

I am a licensed agent in Iowa.

Correct. Collision covers if you hit something and cause damage. Comprehensive covers out of your control damage such as: deer hit, hail storm, fire etc.

Liability insurance covers you in the event you cause damage to someone elses vehicle or if someone is hurt as a result of your negligence. Because you have it parked at a barn, where who knows what could happen,  I'd personally put liability coverage on the trailer because it's very inexpensive for a $1mil limit.

As I stated in an earlier post the only coverage that extends from power unit pulling the trailer is the liability. And it only extends when the trailer is hooked to the truck.  Physical damage (comp and collision) must be scheduled on the trailer in order for you to be covered, even if you have it on the truck. If someone else causes damage to your trailer then it'd be their insurance that covers the loss. However, if they don't have insurance then your insurance would cover the damages, BUT ONLY IF you have physical damage coverage (collision) scheduled on the trailer. If you don't have it your $hit out of luck.

Even though you don't have a loan I'd still put physical damage coverage (comprehensive & collision) on the trailer because if you're like me you could be driving in the dark, hit a deer or pheasant and cause major damage to your truck and trailer. Or there are acts of GOD like hail that can cause very expensive damages to your trailer while it's parked or in use.

You need to insure your trailer. Liability only covers it when you're hooked to the insured vehicle (your truck).  So, basically any damage to your trailer is NOT covered.  My trailer is also paid for, but I insure it. I don't want to have to find the $$ to replace it.

My dad had a tree fall on his. Insurance specifically for your trailer covers things like this.
