I was having issues with my horse under saddle. Kicking out mad not wanting to work. He was not lame as far as limping and passed flextion tests. He also didn't have any sorenss anywhere. The vet said it was a good chance it was his SI. I can't afford a bone scan so we injected his SI. I am on day15 post injection. We have been doing alot of walking trotting. Day 9 he was amazing even went into a lope on his own with no fuss. Day 11 acted just like he did before the injection. Day 14 and 15 he has been ok. The vet said by day 12 the injection should be at full effect but what I am reading from other owners online is it can take a month or so before their horse acted ok. Again because I can't afford the bone scan maybe the injection isn't going to work because that is not his issue. So I was just wondering if anyone else had SI injections and what was your experience.

I just had my mare's SI done last friday. Will start riding her this weekend to see. She's still super reactive to the touch though. Her issues came from he rback. Reluctance to go forward, refusal to lope one direction, constatly flopping leads in the back. Took us 2.5 years to figure out she had KS, passed all lameness evals with flying colors and never has shown my vets any back soreness. We figured it out with a thermal imaging app that my friend has on her phone, one of the attachment ones. Took it to the vet and we xrayed and there it was, along with trauma that appears to be old fratuctures where parts of the bones are just gone. But the compensating threw everything out of whack so we've had to inject the spne, hocks, and SI. May be doing her stifles next round too. I was told with her SI it could take up to 2 months and might need to inject twice to get results. But again this has been a long time coming. I've heard of horses showing complete improvement after a few days, weeks, and months. It seems like it really depeneds on the horse and the extent of the "injury" or irritation. I was told to alternate hot/cold therapy to help the muscles relax so they can start operating correctly and provide the area more/correct support. So I get a towel and soak it in hot water and lay that over the area before I exercise her. And then cold hose after, working on getting an ice horse back pad for her. She does seem happier, but we are just easy lunging the last few days. You may need to work on his muscles as well as the injecting. 

Thank you. So you didn't have to get a bone scan? A X-ray was able to see the SI joint? 

No bone scan, no xray. We just did ultrasound guided injections. We already knew she had soreness in the area, she will drop & flinch bad when you palpate the area. Sometimes even just brushing her. Which once we injected the hocks and her back, it got worse. Ultrasound showed a lot of scar tissue in the area. So she had something major happen to her before I got her as a 3 year old & I'll never know what it was. 

I have had my horse's SI injected for several years now.  Last year, it didn't help.   I tried PEMF therapy.  It worked and so far, no more injections.  When his SI got sore, he would be ever so slightly off in the rear and be reluctant to canter.

When you had it injected the other years how long would you say it took to start working. Was it imediate or did it take awhile 

It usually helped him within a week.

I have had two horses that I have had SI's injected and in both horses it made a HUGE difference. I ended up selling them both not too long after though so I couldn't tell you how long they lasted. 

Don't know where you still stand with it, but my mare is now on week 4 since injections and I'm just now seeing improvement riding. She gets better just a bit every day this week so far 

You need to have a chiropractor put the SI jet back in place and probably need to do that quarterly. Very easy adjustment but very painful when it's out. The injection will help with pain but you have to keep the joint in.
