I was bucked off by my mare last week. (I renamed her Bucking Burrito) as a joke. But I found out yesterday that I managed to break my back in 4 spots. I'm going to require surgery and I know it's going to be a long healing process but any helpful advice is greatly appreciated. My doctor says I'll be able to ride and even compete after I heal but I'm thinking I may invest in a riding vest the kind that eventers wear. Heck I already wear a helmet and the thought of being paralyzed is making my SO panicky about me even riding again.

I got bucked off in 2007 and broke my L-3.  It was a very painful injury. They talked about filling the crushed part with bone cement, but I was told it didn't do much to help, so I opted out of that.  I rode scared for a while, but I got over it.

Wishing you the best of luck with your surgery - what type of surgery is he recommending?

I'm extremely grateful. My doctor s exact quote was "You're lucky your not paralyzed"

Oh man......Do you have flames on your chair? I hate using the Walmart scooters. I couldn't imagine being stuck in one for 20 years.

I'm going to have to get mine filled with the bone cement and we are waiting for one more MRI to see about my tendons.

I'm sorry to hear this...ouch!

Can you describe the type of fracture?  Examples would be: "compression" fractures, "wedge" fractures, "burst" fractures, "chance" fractures.  Do you have any signs of nerve injury?  Where are you now?  Are you wearing a brace?  I don't know your age, but do you have osteoporosis?  Are these lumbar or thoracic fractures?

My first fracture isn't "serious" and I managed to break off the "transverse process" it's what I call the "wing tip" then the actual problem vertebrae is in my lower back and I managed a "chance fracture"with three lower vertebrae.
im 37 so no Osteoporosis yet but I was airborne for 9 years and that'll take a toll on you. I'm currently in a brace and on steroids to try and take the swelling down.

Did you have any abdomen injuries with it?In 2001 i broke my back and neck.I had a 2 level fusion in my lumbar area. When i woke up from surgery,i thought i would never walk again. The pain is horrid,i swear they tie your muscles to the ceiling while doing surgery, lol. My husband took a month off work,im glad he did.

Im sure things have changed since then,i was off work for 21 months,BUT i had to have 2 seperate fusion surgeries.I absolutly had no choice to have the surgery.DO WHAT YOUR DOCTORS AND PT TELLS YOU .I did very well in my recoveries, but like i said, the pain in lower back was horrible. I went back to my VERY physical job,and led a pretty normal life, but only did trail riding.Good luck to you, when is your surgery?

  • Also,i see you are having yours filled,i actually had plates, screws, etc, always remember, the spots above and below a FUSION,take the brunt of the concussion after surgery, and those spots do weaken.so,a vest may be a good idea, however the concussion of impact on a daily basis weaken above and below surgery sites.

I was bucked off in 2016 and broke my lower back in 2 places. I was airlifted to hospital, required surgery with pins and screws and 15 day hospital stay!
My advise is ... not#1 go to best neurosurgeon you can find and # 2. Take your time and put the work in for recovery. I was 61 then and in 6 months was back riding and barrel racing. As of today, I am still going strong with no pain or complications ??.
You have an advantage if you are a non smoker and in reasonably good shape ...and determined!

BTW. I had my helmet on too which I am sure saved my life.

Prayers for your recovery.  This just my opinion, I would not go back to competing, too much can go wrong.  I had a compaction fracture back when I was in my 30's and I am close to 70 and I am really paying for it now.  Just my opinion.  I still trail ride but with much pain.,
