Im looking at purchasing a MJP stud  he gorgeous.  impecibly bred.   but i have heard great things and not so great things.   Gentle, sweet is main thing i hear.  but with that i hear lack of try???  who has experienced this or the opposite.  im looking to breed top futurity and rodeo horses.  My horses MUST have try :)  very important for success   appreciate anyone who has ridden them feed back

I'm just giving you my 2 cents. I have a 10 year old, he's a grandson of Mr. Jess Perry out of a Royal Quick Dash bred mare. He's very sweet on the ground, excellent manners, run out over $40k on the track. He HATES running barrels and will throw his sucker in the dirt in a hot minute. He's pretty quick tempered under saddle and will just sull up and not move if you ask him to do something he doesn't want to do or rear up. He's also run off with my daughter in our home arena because he got mad. Now I have no idea what side it's coming from, because he's the first one I've had bred this way. He's been to the vet, osteopath, equine dentist yearly, all bases have been covered. He's a great trail riding horse and he's big and pretty so I'll probably try to find him a home in that direction. The colt you're looking at may be none of these things, just giving you my experience. Good luck in your search

I had a grandson of MJP. He was by One Sweet Jess and out of a Fishers Dash mare. We had him since he was a yearling, and he sadly had to be put down when he was three. He was big and very muscular. As a 2 year old, some people confused him as a 4 year old.

He was very sweet and gentle, and he had a lot of personality (he was a goofball). He would think everything was a game. During training he would mess with the jockeys and test their balance. During racing, if the track was sloppy, he would jump over the puddles.

I wouldn't say that he lacked try, I would say that he took longer to process things compared to other horses. You need to have a lot of patience when working with one. Not something that I would recommend for beginners.

My experience is good minded, but later mentally maturing. Very willing and pleasent to be around - but took a while to understand how to accept pressure. I consider mine to be a pansy ass about pain. He never tries to cheat me in a barrel race, but he doesn't try his guts out either. I'm not looking to buy another.

I have a great granddaughter and that may be too back to make any difference.  I looked at her pedigree and saw a alot that I liked with plenty of run. She is lazy lazy lazy.  She is practically bombproof and at my age that is kind of what I need.  Very pretty but doesn't really have what I call a 'kind eye'.  She is getting better about actually wanting attention.  At first it was almost she would cringe when I tried to pet on her.  She is very pretty.

I have been running a granddaughter of Mr Jess Perry for the last eight years. She’s out of a daughter of Leaving Memories. My mare has $71,000 plus in barrel racing earnings, she’s tough and gritty and gives her all every run! She loves running barrels! She’s sensitive and smart(too smart sometime lol), I have to keep cool and relaxed with her as she can get pretty wired up before we run but she’s quiet and gentle to be around on the ground. Maybe she’s a freak lol but she’s been a once in a lifetime horse for me??

I LOVE THEM!!! Especially the Corona Cartel/ MJP crosses!!!! Have had 3 in the last few years to train-2 off the track, 1 not. BUT- that's a lot of fire in one bred that way, and I can see how someone who wasn't familiar w how to deal w all that OCTANE, could run into issues! Once all the race track rudeness was replaced w the "BEING BROKE" fundamentals, and learning to have manners and act like a "civilized" steed, they were pretty much a blast and caught on really quickly--sometimes they'd get a lil too big headed bout this new game they were getting to play. So I backed off, let em rest or tracked steers on them at local ropings! I'm not much on rushing any horse for any reason, because I'd rather one I train be around for the next 10 or more years still doing and liking what I had a hand in giving them skills to do, so w that said if you are living life by due dates on the calendar, this cross wouldn't be one I'd go w! MJP w other bloodlines I'm not sure about, but my experience w this certain cross really has been great! And it doesn't hurt that there are a lot of them because they are so successful on the track! The 3 I've had all tried their butts off to please me too, as well as their owners--that are all competing on them now! Good luck!

My 5 year old gelding has MJP on the bottom side of his pedigree, with Inseparable on the topside. He is 16.1H, gorgeous, and so sweet! He is very laid back, and that can be a little frustrating, but feel that he is just a little slow mentally maturing. This last month or so, he has been coming on very nice, and has been so fun to ride. Ears up and happy kind of guy.

I think they have a lot of talent. But there are bloodlines out there that are easier to get along with. Depends how much of a hand you are. Have seeen lots that sull up or work great at home and refuse to perform well anywhere other than that. Not a lot of try in them.

he sounds like a real jewel.

To the OP,,,,,,,,,curious as to why if you have a set goal in mind with your program you are trying to re-invent the wheel?

Same here !!! Had a direct son. Absolutely loved to run barrels at first but as soon as it became a job he threw his sucker in the dirt just like was stated above. Absolutely beautiful horses and confirmation , mine was a sweetheart on the ground. Super nice trail horse. Mine was a DTF on mares side. Hoped it would help. Nope.

I have a Streakin La Jolla son, out of a Dash for Cash daughter. At home and in low stress places; he's laid back, quick learner, everything seems to come very easy to him, a pleaser, gets bored easy-which then turns into getting lazy, very tuff, lots of heart. He's a nice mover, stays underhimself naturally. Being hauled; unloads with a 'here for the party' attitude, needs a confident rider, all business once you get to the gate but getting there can be a show. I swear I can hear him say, "hold my beer and watch this".
