Driving on I-90 west towards billings. Forcast shows potential snow for next weekend. Any issues with towing a trailer in that type of weather? I have been there before middle of winter winter and see trailers on highways. Any tips would be appreciated.
100000% depends on driver skill. Keep in mind, it is winter here from like October through May - so most of us are well practiced. The first few storms of the season, there are typically lots of wrecks until people get in the groove of winter driving. Also, the roads haven't had a hard freeze yet, so they probably won't be tacky. I wouldn't pull a bumper pull. If you're used to winter driving, I'd say go for it but watch out for all of the people who don't don't how to drive. If you're not used to pulling in the snow, I'd pick a different weekend. If it is windy through there (which happens a lot) and slick, I'd probably not risk it. Next weekend is also opening day for rifle season, so a lot of trailers will be on the road for that (some that don't haul much other than hunting season) and they generally check papers really hard Opening weekend, so don't leave without your brand inspections. Good luck!
Thanks. I was thinking since its I90 they would keep it plowed. Pulling a gooseneck. Have been in some rough weather before just not MT and have heard its different
Plowed makes it more slick when it is frozen :) it packs the little bit left down into a sheet of ice.
Go slow. Never stomp on the brakes and lock them up in snow. If you start sliding, don't panic and lightly pump the brakes. Four wheel drive only helps with traction. It doesn't help with stopping.
Check for Montana road conditions - they are constantly changing. Lost of snow and ice on some roads this week
You can have all sorts of issues if you drive faster than what the conditions allow. If it's windy it adds another element of danger. Be smart, drive slow, give yourself plenty of time to brake. Don't crowd the plow if they are out and don't tail gate. Whatever you do don't jam on your breaks. You'll lock them up and have the potential to jack knife and roll. I can't stress enough to just drive slow. And if the DOT says no travel then by all means don't travel.
