I have a nervous and anxious gelding whose previous owner ran him on Chlorpromazine. I ran him a handful of times about a year ago without using any drugs and he was a mess. He bolts if there are any loud noises, commotion, horses passing, etc. but was somewhat focused on the pattern. He went lame shortly after I purchased him and was diagnosed with navicular. We recently nerved him so I am hoping that he will calm down some since we have addressed his pain. I plan on using earplugs but I am wanting to try a calming supplement to help take the edge off when we start running again. I have tried CBD, valerian root, CEP Gear Down, and added magnesium with no difference. Are there any other herbs or supplements that have worked on horses previously ran on CP or Ace?

Free choice Alfalfa and orchard (this is the only hay he will eat, I have tried nice quality local and timothy with no luck). Soaked beet pulp pellets, Haystack Special Blend, Renew Gold, Platinum Performance GI, and Depaolo Equine Excel herbs. I have heard that Platinum can make them hot and anxious, so I stopped giving it for a few months and there was no change. He is a hard keeper and I saw a big difference using Platinum so I put him back on it.

I wonder how he would be if you took all the other supplements and feed out for a while and see how he does on just Renew Gold for a few months.

Is he nervous at just races or at home too?

Try guanabenz. Best thing ever for a nervous one, & it does not take the run out.

He is definitely more of a spooky/watchy and anxious horse at home compared to your average horse, but it is MUCH worse at races.

I was hoping to stay away from giving him drugs to run, but if it comes down to it I will give it a try!

Ive had luck with Relaxmor from TSC and the Redmond stress product. No horse needs free choice alfalfa. I'm guessing that's your problem.

Is it possible your gelding's got some ulcers bothering him? That might explain some of his hard keeping and nerves. Might be worth asking your vet?

Can I ask what brand of CBD you tried?
