My son is 6 years old and has been riding since he was 3. He is a good little rider, but we are getting ready to step him up to a new, faster horse. We are borrowing the horse from a friend as our finances aren't in a position to buy right now. She's a good mare, but stronger than his current pony. .
What are opinions on the Sure Grip Seats for kids during runs? He weighs a solid 65 pounds. How easy can they "detach?" My biggest fear is using one and him having an accident and being stuck. My other biggest fear is him getting a little loose in the saddle and then falling. I am just looking to learn more about them.
Well I have ridden with one and I think you would come off in a wreck. The smaller a person is the narrower the bands are so you have less contact with the velcro/seat. I do know if one barrel racer who remain nameless because I fear for my life that was riding one of Edmond Cameron's horses. They run as hard as anything I have ever seen to the first barrel set hard and turn. Said rider was using a Magic Seat and when the horse slammed on his brakes she went right over the horse's head so I would say they do turn loose. I know a lot of people around here that use them and the kids build enough confidence pretty fast and don't use them very long.
