i have a app mare that i purchased from a sale barn. you CAN not touch her mouth. so that means no bit, wormer or meds can be given by mouth. I just had her teeth floated last week and she was REALLY sharp. she picks her head up as high as he possiably can to get away. she will run backwards and just do anything to get away from you touching her mouth. we of course had to sedate her to her teeth. she is perfect to be around zero other issues. any advice how i can work with her ? how can we help with this to make her see its not going to hurt her.

Might just have toi figure out what caused it. SOmething for sure got her that she remembers. I have a mare that was that way with her ears. I mean, nowhere near them could you go. To Halter her, you just put a rope around her neck. Bridling her you just had to unbuckle and rebuckle on the other side BUT...... if you slipped or that headstall even remotely got close to those ears, the fit was on. ANd she was a cutter that won about 80K cutting and then they sent her off to roping trainer. Its a mystery but she was probably whipped over the head or got hung up or something. Its taken me 4 years, but she will let MEEEEEEEEEEE touch her ears , wear a normal halter, etc... Bridle still has to be done same way but she trusts me now. It might just take some time.

Positive reinforcement/clicker training is perfect for this type of problem. Find someone who is very knowledgeable about this kind of training, might be easier to find a dog trainer since it is more popular in that world. It's not just giving good rewards and if not done properly can cause more problems, but that is true of every training method.

If this were my horse I would be doing alot of grooming and just rubbing her face all over and using a soft brush on her face and then work your way to her mouth lighty rubbing maybe give her a cookie once you can rub her mouth without her moving away, just lots and lots of face time with good rubs

I would not tie her up while working with her, I would just mess with her without her being tied up so she wont panic once you try to rub her face and mouth, let her move away if she feels uncomforable when you touch her around her mouth, get her to trust you and I bet the more you rub and groom her face she will get more trusting. Is she broke to ride? Is so I would just use a lite Hackamore for a while untill she learns you are not going to hurt her.

Speaking as the voice of experience, purchasing horses out of sale barns can be "interesting."

Take horse to vet to make sure nothing is going on.  While they are sedated and can't fight you, touch her mouth while she wakes up.  If she checks out I would get more sedative from the vet and do it a few times.  She should over pretty quick.

When your vet Floated her teeth, did your vet see any thing that could have caused her to be so mouth shy? Like any scarring on her tongue. Theres always a reason why horses go threw a sale barn, pretty sure this poor mare didnt have a very stellar life.

I have a mare that hates to have her mouth messed with, when I had her she had zero issues with her mouth, a friend bought her from me to use as a brood mare, she had her for about 7 years and I got her back and now this mare is a nightmare to deworm, I dont know what happen, but I have a feeling they used a twitch at times and may have over done the twitching. She has gotton a tad better over time but I still dread when I need to deworm her.

We gave sadation while doing her teeth we do not believe in power tools so my dentist done her by hand. While sedated he looked her over for TMJ said he didnt feel like that was the issue. she was a number 7 out of 10 on how sharp her points was, and it did affect her rang of motion for eating. she never had her teeth done before. Taking her vet tomorrow for a ultasound ill ask her to look her over also while shes sedated. I hope we can fix this. lol yes this purchase has been very interesting so far. She really perfect other then this issue !picture of my pretty girl. Iv waited many year to have my dream horse and this is her ! I dont even want to barrel horse on her just go on some trail rides and look at her in the pasture.
