Can yall give me your opinions on the best lameness vets in Texas.  Im located in east texas but was looking at Dr Lee with Double x equine or Dr Hand at ESMS or any others that you may know of.  Needing to take my horse to get looked at wanting someone good but who has decent prices to & isnt going to charge an arm & a leg.....

My experience is you usually get what you pay for.

I totally agree with that.  Im not saying I'm not willing to pay just wanting to find a good lameness vet so we can get this issue figured out.

I actually had one of the best lameness vets in CA tell me that the cheapest way to find out whats wrong with your horse is to turn them out for a whole year. If they are not any better they never will be no matter what you throw at them. In a way its kind of true. LOL

I liked Dr Cody Johnson at Elgin Equine both time my mare had some lameness issues. He is very up front and informative. Some friends from Louisiana take their race horses to Elgin as well when there is lamness. I think they use Dr Hayes.

I totally agree with this.  A great Ocala, FL vet gave me similar advice.

Not always. For example a DDFT needs stall rest. Kicking your horse out for a year continually putting strain on that will not heal a darn thing.

I really like Weston Warnock at BVEH Navasota. If I need to send someone for a referral, he's one of my go tos. Alternatively my old boss at my last job is Dr. Randall with Collier Equine Veterinary Service, he is also really good, also does chiropractic and accupuncture, and his wife is a barrel racer so he understands us LOL. Warnock's wife is also a barrel racer and a vet!

Not from that part of the country but I will say that while at the WPRA finals @ Waco last fall, there were two Vet clinics set up.  One was the Double X, the other was Brazos Valley, I think.  The Double X was backed up the entire time, the other one didn't hardly get any attention.  My take from it was that Double X must have been pretty highly thought of.

Between the 2 you mentioned, I would choose Dr Lee without a second thought.  I'm not a fan of Hand nor the clinic he is working out of/part owner.  They are extra expensive. From what I hear from quite a few people Dr Lee is very thorough and doesn't overcharge you either.  You save time and money going to a vet that will be thorough and get it right the first time. I agree with the other comments if it won't fix itself in a year, it probably never will but depending on the injury, they may need months of stall rest to let it heal. Hopefully, you have a minor issue that just needs a little TLC.  Dr Honnas is wonderful but if you aren't already an established client of his I don't think you can hardly get an appointment with him.

Being in AR I've only had the opportunity to use Dr. Lee once, but he was awesome.  I've watched him go through friend's horses too, and he was incrediblly thorough.  I would not hestitate to go back to him in a heartbeat... or even seek him out and drive down there if I was having an issue.

Don Lee is absolutly amazing I drive from South Texas most of the time to use him. He has caught so many things the vets down here have missed. I think I have been using him for 5yrs now. And his prices are much cheaper then our area as well. I can drive up there and back and still be 50% cheaper then down here. I have not used Dr Hand so cant help you on that one.
