| Probably the first thing you need to do is contact the rodeo sponsor. That person can give you the best answers to any questions you have. Usually if you are on the rodeo team, at least some of your expenses might be paid. You may be fortunate enough to to get some type of scholarship that might pay for some tuition and books. Don't know about SD but I have watched the barrel racing at two Texas college rodeoed lately and it was rather disappointing. Any full time student can rodeo but you pay your own fees etc. Several years ago I went to a local college rodeo and a girl from the University of Teas whipped everyone. She was the only UT person there. Sort of doubt they have a rodeo team. |

Location: Iowa | Anyone can join the team at SDSU. The rodeo coach was, and I think still is, Ron Skovly. I can pm you his cell phone number. The top 6 men and top 4 women are the only ones who receive a small scholarship and stipend for the rodeos. There are ten rodeos total: South Dakota State, North Dakota State, North Platte, Iowa Central in Fort Dodge, Dickinson State, Iowa State, River Falls Wisconsin, Black Hills, and Nebraska Lincoln were the ones when I competed. At SDSU we had monthly meetings to go over schedules, standings, and hauling partners. The college rodeo is definitely an independent sport, you are responsible for everything as in individual. Ron will enter you in the rodeos and guide on when to leave and how to get there. While yes, most people tried to trailer pool, you were on your own and responsible for getting yourself to all the rodeos and keeping your grades up. There is a team trailer and team practice at the Brookings arena, however, that is for those events involving cattle, goats and rough stock. There is a small place to keep horses at Rude Stables, otherwise most “barrel racing only” girls kept their horses out of town and practiced on their time. If you need some ideas on where to keep a barrel horse, I can pm you a few off site sables as well. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time at SDSU, do not plan to make money at college rodeo! |
