Location: the land of dust & sticks | please share your diy icing techniques. I’ve used gel ice packs and a polo before but honestly ice packs don’t seem to cool the leg as much as actual ice. So I’ve tried a pair of “leggings”...just cut the legs off and put on horses leg and added ice, a quilt, and polo but this cumbersome and horse doesn’t necessarily like it, so last night I used the legging and just vetwrapped the bottom added ice and vet wrapped the top but it still slid down the leg....so..what are other ideas..... |

Location: Illinois | I just buy a bag of ice and dump it down my Shoo-Flys. Tighten them at the bottom so it doesnt drop out. I also have Hidez ice socks I use from time to time, but the shoo-flys are easier |

Location: NW. Florida | You can use a folding chair bag, put it on the leg, fill it up, and vetrap it up above the hock. |

| I use maxi pads. Any generic one will do. Wet them, stick them in the freezer. I don't get them too wet so they stay flexible. Ice falls to the bottom. This doesn't. I put on with SMB's to hold in place. Good for about 30 minutes of cold. Repeat if necessary |

Location: South Georgia | I feel like a wet leg either stays cold longer, or gets colder, so I hose the leg and then apply the ice wrap. I just have the Tough 1 wraps. They stay in the freezer at the barn. When I've had to use them for a hock, I'd stack them and add a bag of frozen pees to cover the hock area. |

I saw the tough 1 ice wraps at a race recently and they looked pretty good. The guy told me they are getting awesome reviews and feedback, very comparable to the higher priced sets. I might give those a shot. |

Location: the land of dust & sticks | flitastic....tell me how you are using the cool aid wraps....I have a pair as well and was not real impressed. I put them in freezer overnight even and they only stay cool about 10 mins and the leg was barely cool to the touch, if at all, when removed. As for the tough ones wraps...does anyone know if they have changed them in any way??...I had one wrap several yrs ago and the gel froze rock solid and it didn’t conform to leg or stay in place very well. Thanks everyone. |

Not sure how old mine are, but I keep them in the freezer and I do think the gel freezes solid. However, with a pre-wet leg, the cubes of ice do make the entire leg freezing cold even if every centimeter of the "cubes" in each square don't touch the skin completely. My gelding recently had a bad case of cellulitis from his hock down. After wetting the leg, icing 20 minutes, and removing the wrap, the entire leg was ice cold to the touch and swelling was visibly reduced. |

I tried the freezer and they would get hard as a rock so I just started letting them soak in ice water for a bit before I used them. THey stayed soft and pliable that way. As they dry they pull heat from the legs. Mind you , my reason for using them is I have a horse thats recovered from laminitis/Founder, and after a run all he really needs is to have the blood going to his front feet cooled not really ice the legs. It certainly does its job at that. |

| It sounds absurd, but I use otter pops and polos/standing bandages. They are the perfect length, and come attached to each other with perforations so you can just pull off however many you need to surround their leg and then wrap them with the polo/bandage. I've reused the same otter pops lots of times. |

| Years ago, while on the road I needed to ice a leg. Bought a package of cheap diapers, soaked one in the ice chest then wrapped it on the leg and covered with a leg wrap. Worked like a charm. |
