IMO--people will find the money for their hobby, which is what barrel racing is for MOST. In our area there are still the playday shows, then there is the middle ground shows and then the Big Shows. Completely different crowds at all of them but as long as people are having fun and enjoying horses---does it matter ?
Nope. I've been doing this since before the D system. Like I said, we are upper middle class. I cannot afford to go and have fun; much less be competitive. The women I know that continue to go have serious money. Professional or entrepreneur husbands who make the big bucks. My rig is 100k and still one of the poorest in the parking lot.
The incentives would not have taken off without the influx of wealthy into the sport. Again, when you can win without winning or win because you can afford better "equipment " any sport will change.
