Just curious, anyone who has gone thru a divorce. Did you keep your horses, sell down to one or two, or get out completely?  Of course attorneys and counselors etc. are just going to tell you to get completely out to simplify things.  Just wanting to get opinions about what people like us really have to do in order to make it work without quitting completely.

I kept all my horses, tack, trailer, etc. the horses were mine from before we were married and the trailer was a gift from my mother for me graduating nursing school. I didn't have a 1d world beater horse or rig so he didn't fight.

Horses are considered both an asset and liability. It would take a horse worth over about $25K to end up solely on the asset side of the column. Trailer is an asset, but unless it is wholly owned by the non-horse person it would easily stay with the horse person. Same for tack. Everything gets assigned a very fair $$ amount (not that there wouldn't be much arguing on said amount) and division is made of items both horse and not horse until an agreement is reached. Items that were one party's or the others before marriage, or gifted only to one party, are usually listed but are not a 'trade' item.

I have all horses registered in my name only. It doesn't help on the give/take list as far as valuation, but it helps keep things simple if we were ever to divorce. I would have to trade very little of household items to keep all equine items. But, I wouldn't be able to afford keeping all my horses if divorced. The F250 would cost me some to keep, but real estate would be our big issue. Two properties, the one I can afford isn't horse property, the farm I couldn't touch to stay. So it would be a mess!

I would probably have to sell out of the breeding part of horses and choose two or three as keepers. I have the income for that no matter what.

My horses were my sanity when going thru a divorce.  There's other ways to trim the fat and save money.   I kept everything, added more work and a temporary roommate for additional income.  I had great friends that made sure I got a fantastic lawyer, that was the best $$ I spent.

You could give a horse or two to a friend....js lol.

Joking, you know that. That's a tough question. Probably easiest to get rid of horses while going through divorce as you will have so much on your plate to deal with, BUT on the other hand, I would be ****ed if I was going to lose my horses over a man. There's been a few horses that I just wouldn't part with. They would have been the last to go.

Heck, I bought a couple more!  He wasn't going to be griping at me for spending too much time in the barn anymore!  And I wasn't worried about 'our' retirement since I had planned much better than he had before we got married.

Seriously, bought my daughter her dream horse, then bought another one the year after that, then bought a LQ trailer and stayed gone a lot more.

The wife must have not had a very good lawyer if stud was bought during the marriage.

I made out the same as brlracerchick. Although he threatened to take everything - my lawyer told me I owned everything before him so he couldn't touch anything. And my mom told me to let him. She asked where he was going to put the all the horses (3) and a pygmy goat.

At the time of my marriage I had 2 horse trailers. One horse and a bunch of tack. I kept all of it, he didn't want any of it.

My 1st husband didn't want anything to do with the horses, so it was easy. I kept it all. For a short period of time, he got nasty, but in the end he got lazy and just wanted to get it over with LOL

I went through a messy divorce.  I sold 2 and kept my old mare and my good mare.  As much as I wanted to keep them all, financially I couldn't afford it.  My horses were a want; not a need.

When I divorced my first husband, I had one horse, a truck and a trailer. I kept it all. I already owned the horse and a different truck and trailer when I met him. But he didn't even squabble about it or anything.
