 This may be long. lol

My daughter goes 3 day's a week to ride with a reining trainer. He trains out of a barn, which just happens to be owned by her boyfriend ( he's 24)and his dad. The "trainer" has some outside horses, plus rides 11 head for them, and has been with them for about a month. Last weekend, the kids ( daughter and boyfriend) came for dinner and started saying how ticked off her horse became with the "trainer" and was ringing her tail, the session went way to long, and the horse was over drilled. The boyfriend stepped in, and put a stop to it, told the trainer the horse had had enough for the day, and proceeded to tell him that if he got any of his horses ringing their tail like that, that he would NOT be happy.

Today I went with her to her lesson. When the trainer was pretty much done with her filly, we were all standing around ( myself, my daughter, her boyfriend, and the trainer sitting on her horse) he preceeded to say he needed to take his spurs off with her mare. My daughter replied " I hardly ever ride her with spurs" The trainer looked at her, and said " Oh really??? When you have trained 12 world champions, and countless national champions, then you can come back and tell me how to ride and train these horses...... yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah" He went on and on, and got off the horse. This whole time, her boyfriend is getting hotter n hotter under the colar, he's walking a circle, Lyndsey is standing there with eyes wide enough to drive a semi through, and I am just dumbfounded. Nobody is saying a word as we were all in dis-beliefe, except the "trainer" is still going on and on like the ever ready battery.Lyndsey walks out of the arena leading her horse crying , the boyfriend says " I'm counting, but it aint workin" and follows her out of the arena half way down the isle way, and turns to come back and proceeds to tell the trainer, that he wont stand for that, and he's about to find out just how hard life can be. He then goes outside to catch up with my daughter, and he calls his dad .  So I'm standing there, still dumbfounded, still havent said a word. He looks at me and says " Well, I know I probably wasnt very fair with her, it's just all the stuff that has happened to me in the past, and I have never been handed a barn full of horses like this with this much talent, and riders with this much talent and I feel like I'm fighting for my life" I told him what ever fight he think's he's fighting, it's all in his head, and he has a great opportunity there, but he needs to stick to his original program, and not try so hard to impress everyone with his past accomplishment's with sh*tters, and he cant train a barn full of colts in 1 day. They can only take so much, and over drilling they will regress rather then progress. We get home, and the trainer calls to appologize again to her on the phone.

This guy is trying to hard, thus placing more stress on himself and the horses, and because of this, he's deviated from his original program wich everyone was impressed with to begine with.He is talanted, He works hard, he's at the barn from 7:00 am till 9 or 10 each night, and so far has worked 7 day's a week. He keeps talking about all the national champions he has trained, but he never got the credit for them. Everyone is tired of hearing about it,we all hear it 15 times a day, everyday. They told him last week to quite talking about them, and make some more. LOL

Now my daughter doesnt want to go ride with him, because she doesnt want a repeat of this. She still cant figure out what happened, and neither can any of us that were standing there.  She's afraid the trainer is going to get fired. Her boyfriend made it clear he would be back to talk to him later. She's afraid of him over pressuring her filly and demanding more from her then she's ready for at this point. She doesnt want to send our 2 yr old colt to him.She really likes this trainer, if he would just normalize and relax. She's afraid if she doesnt go ride with him, he will get fired. lol. So what would you guy's do? How would you approach this situation??? Stick to the plan and go ride? Not go ride?

I don't know does he do this often, maybe he is just stresses out over all the horses he has to ride.  It sounds like his plate is full, but he should be professional and not act like he did.  I know people screw up, I do alot.  It took some guts to call and apologize, some would just let it ride.  Maybe he thinks this is his last shot at something good and if he screws it up then it won't come again.  I think if it keeps happening then there is a problem, but if it is just once or twice, well he just messed up.  Good luck , I hope everything works out.

LOL Dan. Yes... at least your honest!  lol

Playingdueces, I have no idea if this is normal for him or not. He's only been in the barn about a month. We all went to a clinic of his a while back and he really impressed alot of us, thus, the job offer to come to their barn. Now he is pressuring up, and his riding has changed some. I think he is trying to hard to show the owners a big change in their horses really fast, which he doesnt need to do.

Three corners, I agree, if he is trying to impress a lot of people then it could be the stress level, but when my horses are at the trainer then if I see just a little improvement I am happy. Not all horses improve as fast as others, I would think he needs to work on getting the best results out of the horse no matter how long it takes.  Maybe he just needs to lighten the load.  I think it would make some mad but it sounds like he is on that path anyway. Sounds like he needs to hire someone just to warm horses up and cool them down, give him extra training time.

I know in different areas of the country people are raised and act different. But it's always been my experience that the best riders and trainers down play their abiltiy.  Several years ago I sent a horse to a Hall Of Fame cutting horse trainer. I took a friend with me to visit my horse. When I introduced them I told her who he was and some of the things he'd done and some of the horses he'd ridden and owned. I know he was pleased that I was interested enough to know all this about him but he was very humble. Professionals are just not known to brag.

The fact that he claims to have trained all these champions but not gotten credit for it concerns me. Do you know he actually rode these champions or is it all in his head?

I hope for all involved that the man works out but he doesn't sound good. I hope everyone keeps a eye on him before he ruins some good horses.

Sounds like he's trying to justify something.  I'm afraid I'd have went off at him like Dan said.  If this trainer is so good, he doesn't need reminded of it and doesn't need to hear himself bragging on himself.  Did that make any sense????

It depends. For me I'd take his age into consideration. If he is  35 and acting like this then I'd go off. If he is 21 and acting like this then he needs a little seasoning himself and he'll get that in time.

Sometimes it pays to remember our own stupid mistakes and let it ride. I know I've made more than my share, and it would be nice to think I could help someone else mature into their position a little bit. Calling to apologize was HUGE. He's not all bad  but a couple of good knocks couldn't hurt either !

I would also agree that calling to apologize is HUGE.  I'd give it another try and go ride.  This all might have been a wake up call for him and maybe he will simmer down.  Sounds like he is feeling really pressured to do well.  If it continues, then rethink riding with him.  Good luck with him.  I rode with a trainer that had issues once.  I learned a lot now that I look back on it but it wasn't always fun.

HELLO TC! Long time no talk too.

I try real hard to give people a second chance. Let Lindsey have a few weeks off and see if she changes her mind.

I agree though that true "Pro's" don't blow their own horn. I'd sit back and continue to watch him and his temper. Might be the reason he never got the credit for pass horses he trained, pass owners saw him pressuring them and moved them to someone else before he could blow their minds. Think about it.

I am off to KC today. It's a beautiful day for a road trip, not sure how my horses will feel about it! LOL. Later.

I too would agree that the good trainers don't usually toot their own horn.  If this person trained all these champions then he knows what it took to get them there including the time and patience.  What concerns me is your daughters response.  I would hate to think that she would lose her enthusiasm or motivation over this trainer.  Self-confidence is such a fragile thing and I'd sure hate to see this guy blow it for her. Was this the horse that was 'a little off' earlier?

Thank's so much for all your input!

I have seen the same red flag's you guy's see, as have the daughters BF and his dad. Nobody want's their horses to turn into tail ringing grinchy sour pusses that cant perform. He's been warned by the owners about his over use of spurs, he's been warned about trying to do to much to fast and over riding these colts, he's been warned about excessive "head down" style, as it may work for strictly reiners, but not reined cow horses, which they have. He has no cow experience.Yet, he think's if the "head down" extreme works for reiners, it should work for reined cow horses. He forgets they have to be able to see the cow and not fall on their face taking it down the wall, and the judges want uniformity between the dry work, and the cow work. Ears level with the withers is fine, head stuck between their knees doesnt work. lol

She's going to go ride tomarrow and the kids will work cows. They are hoping he'll make the connection, relax, and hopefully he'll allow HIS horse to look at the cow. lol

BTW, the "trainer" is in his 40's! His past accomplishments came mainly from training Arab reiners. lol. The kids laugh, and say "No wonder he think's these are all super stars and cant believe how talanted the second stringers are" lol. They have 6 others ( first string )  in training with Todd Bergen.  He does have talant, but there is holes in his knowledge, as far as corolation to dry work and cow work. He also doesnt seem to understand what a no talant arab can take, and does take to make something out of, a good horse cant, and there IS a difference between a arab, and a QH, a reiner and a working cow horse . My daughter likes riding with him, as there is pieces to his program that are awsome, but geezzz, and he's afraid if anybody doubts him, or he shows a weakness, then he's volnerable. He has called now 3 times yesterday to make sure all was ok, and again this morning. I really think he worries to much, and is placing to much stress on himself, so he's stressing everyone else out including the horses. He just needs to relax!

Teehaha, no, different horse this particular time.

Sounds like someone I'm familiar with. I wouldn't let him touch any of my horses. Theres no need to "drill" a young horse the way he does. That is not training. A true foundation is all that is needed. Spurs don't have to be part of the program . Ride on but move to greener pastures.
