| Looking to switch my gelding, possibly to this feed. Anyone feed it? Also, I am so confused, on the website and many other articles I've been reading lately states that horses should have a minimum of 6 pounds of grain a day. My guy gets 2 pounds of grain currently. Am I in the wrong? |

Location: North Dakota | Horses don't "need" any amount of grain. But if you are feeding a grain/pelleted feed, there will be a recommended amount on the bag for your horse's age, weight, and workload. Many feeds are designed to be fed at a rate of 4-8lbs per day. Take for example the Triple Crown Low Starch, the recommended feeding rate for a 900-1,100lb horse is 6lbs per day. If you feed less than that, your horse will not be getting the full amount of vitamins and minerals the feed is fortified with. If your horse is an easier keeper and doesn't need several lbs of feed per day, you could get a ration balancer or other feed that has a lower feeding rate. Triple Crown has the 30% balancer which you only need to feed 1lb of, and Triple Crown Lite which has a feeding rate of 2-4lbs. Other ration balancers include Purina Enrich, Hygain balance, Woody's Balancer (my favorite), Gro N Win, and many others. All of which have a 1-2lb feeding rate and provide all the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids for most horses. |
