Those of you who take in outside horses to ride… do you find there is a need for someone to just put time on a horse. Ones that are already started and not buckers, just need time under the saddle? If so, how much do you charge per horse? I work from home and have the ability to ride every day. We are buying our dream house/land and i really want to try to bring in a little extra income to help out. Obviously not trying to get rich off riding horses, but every little bit helps. (I have been riding for almost 20 years and started/patterned/finished my own barrel horses. I’m not new to riding by any means, just new to the idea of taking in client horses)

Many years ago, when I took outside horses, I only had a couple like that, where the horse was already started but needed more miles.

None of them really had any problems. They were just green and needed riding.

So yes, there might be people out there. But I'd say the majority is going to be colt starting.

I have paid to have finished horses kept legged up when too busy to ride and like winter when the days were too short. So working people might want hoses kept legged up.  That rate was cheaper though as some days the trainer alternated with riding and just ponying. Except my A-hole gelding that would torture the pony horse.  He had to get rode all the time.  He was also the type to get unbroke when not rode regularly.  Hense the need to pay to keep him rode but his bill was never discounted lol

Well not all saddle time is equal. Some I got and wished they hadnt had so many wet pads by the person who rode them, every time you sit a horse your training it. If it came needing riding That became part of my service.

There is definitely a need for that. I'm paying someone right now to help me ride a horse. He just needs riding. She comes to me though--if I had the time to bring him to her, I would ride him. But I'm sure there are people out there who want to get their horses tuned-up--a good month's worth of riding at your place might work.

Also, consider giving lessons to older riders. Maybe not actually lessons, beause they know how to ride, but guidance. I know a few older riders who have lost their confidence and just need a little help. I believe there's a need for that but I never see anyone marketing to that group.

Price is hard to say. It depends on where you are.

I am paying someone right now to ride a green one for me. Absolutely nothing wrong with the mare; she just needs miles and time and I cannot offer that to her right now.

When taking in a client horse, or sending yours to someone to be ridden, do you sign a contract or just a verbal agreement? If a contract is the normal, anyone have one for this they would be willing to share?
