I have a black & white paint and a palomino.  I am wondering what all you fellow black & palomino owners do to keep your horse's coats rich & dark throughout the summer.  I assume they will fade if I leave them out in the sun.  Is this correct?  I have started keeping them in their stalls during the day and turning them out at night.  I considered full fly sheets, but wasn't too impressed with the way they stayed on & restricted in their necks when grazing.  Any other secrets or tricks you want to share?  Anyone tried the Black As Knight or Gold As Sun supplement from Cheval International?  Thanks.

I do the same thing with my palomino horse - turn him out during the night and keep him in the barn under fans during the day.  That has kept his coat really golden and healthy.  It didn't seem to affect his ability to compete during the days, either.  I just made sure to warm up and cool down good....and not tie him in direct sun at the trailer during competition days.

He is also on Bluegreen Algae and NONI juice which both seem to maintain a good healthy coat on both him and my sorrel.  But the barn during the daylight hours does great for me!  I usually turn them out sometime after 5-6pm so they can have a little sunlight.

Good luck!

I have a black mare. She doesn't so much fade as the hot sun burns her coat.

I keep all my horses in during the day under fans and turn out at night.

Since the "fading" is actually burned hair coat I'm not sure any supplement would help that.

I didn't realize that the "fade" was actually burned hair coat.  Interesting.  Guess I will resort to keeping them in during the day.  Just was trying to avoid having to clean stalls.  Any idea why black cows don't fade or burn?  They must have some built in SPF. <ha>

My palomino stays under the shade trees in the pasture during the day and seems to stay dark all summer. But otherwise I would agree with everyone by keeping them in in the day and letting them out at night.

Normally, true blacks don't bleach out or fade. The dark browns that look almost black will fade or get either a reddish or gold tint to the sun bleached hairs. Also, the salt from sweat will cause rusting on the hair. Rinsing sweat off with just plain water will help prevent this. Palominos will fade/bleach in the sun however, no matter what shade they are. I keep mine inside and turn out at night, even my sorrels will have a richer red color if kept inside during the hot Texas sunny days.

I also keep my Yella horse in during the day and turn him out at night during the summer months... It keeps his coat nice and golden... In the winter I reverse this, and keep them up at night and out during the day..

I had a black gelding for years. He was turned out all the time. I never used a sheet, after I rode, I would always hose off the sweat because the extra salt on the hair would turn the saddle area brown. He stayed as black and shiny as could be in the summer. People always asked me how I kept him so black! I think it was because he was a true black.

My good horse is black in the winter and a light bay in the spring and summer, but he is registered as Dun (go figure?).  He doesn't tolerate being stalled very well so I have no choice but to have him turned out.  I just try to keep him in a pasture with a lot of trees for shade and a run in shed.  No matter what I do he will change colors like a mood ring.

I do the same thing. But, this time of the year it's hard to get them changed over. Some days it starts getting pretty hot but nights are still pretty chilly.

...as far as a true black won't fade...I know two dash for perks babies around here that are black as black can be but still get sunburnt and thier owners have to keep them up in the summer to keep from that red brown tinge on them.

right now I'm keeping a fly sheet on mine but when it gets really hot I'll keep him up during the day. I even asked my vet and he said that is about all I can do for him

There is a feed supplement called Black as Knight and another one for palominos...Valley Vet Supply carries them and I think Jeffers Equine Supply does as well...both have internet sites.  I know that the Black as Knight works great keeping dark brown & bays dark in this TX summer...also we turn out during the night and keep in during the day as well.

Heard once that feeding alfalfa vs a grass hay and pellets vs a sweet or textured feed keeps palominos dark gold too.

Exhibitor Labs makes a product called Quick Screen the has UV protectants.  Spray it on hair and it lasts about 8 days.  I use this on my black stud and it keeps him jet black & shinning.  I have to keep him out of the sun as much as possible since he went down from "heat exhaustion".  Black really soaks up the sun producing lost of heat as I found wearing black jeans.

Hi Tia, not trying to start one, but please reread that I said "normally" true blks. don't fade. I have seen numerous blacks that are kept outside 24/7 and never fade or discolor, and have seen a few that have gotten that reddish brown tint to them.(I have my theories on that but will keep em to myself) Anyhow, just wanted to clarify what I had written earlier, not intending to pick on ya.

My black mare is out 24-7 and never fades, she has a white star marking that looks fluerescent against the black!  She is a broodmare, so I don't haul her and get to show her off.......go figure!!!
