Location: If I ever get back to Oklahoma..... | Is there anybody out there who has dark brown or almost black hair and have had it highlighted? Blond streaks??
I have been wanting to get my dark brown hair highlighted with blond highlights. My fear though is it kind of has a red tint to it, and Im afraid that it will turn red instead of the golden blond streaks that I want. When out in the sun, my hair naturally gets blond highlights.
Any suggestions?? |

Location: I'm lost - please tell me, I'm not on BHW again!!! | Have a professional do it. They need to bleach it past the red/orange stage is the problem why it comes out that color. There are professional colors that lift the dark without doing to much damage to the hair and leaving it that beautiful blonde highlight! |

Location: Florida | When you are dying dark hair it is hard to get a natural blonde appeal. So what you have to do it bleach strands of your hair and then use the color you want over it. Or atleast have a 20 VOL. mixed with the hair dye. If your hair is dark I would suggest having a proffesional do it because you are going to have to bleach it for true blonde highlights.

Any suggestions?? I used to get highlights in mine. My hair is so long that it would cost over $100 each time. When I had mine done, my hair stylist would use several different colors of blonde. That would blend in better with my dark hair. I didn't have the super white blonde streaks. I had a variety! You might want to see about getting different shades instead of one. Mine didn't turn red. If you get it done by a pro then you shouldn't have a problem.  |

Location: Little House on the Prairie, SD | My hair is very dark brown, almost black and I've gotten highlights several times. Once my friend did it and I ended up looking very much like a skunk. It's always a fun change though, when it turns out good. I got mine done in Jan. and I'm getting some nice roots going now, so I'm debating about getting them touched up or just dying over them. I haven't really had a problem with getting the red/orange thing (although I can't see the back of my head...) except for when I do dye over them--you can still see where the streaks were, but that's not all bad I guess. |

Location: Walking in the spiderwebs... | It depends on if your hair is in the warm category. They have the redish orange tones to it. If you are, I wouldn't reccomend doing this b/c the upkeep would be horendous and expensive. I say this to all my customers, but if you are a neutral brown it would be alot easier. Other wise you would be tormenting your hair. A professional will be able to tell you what sort of color code you fit into. |

Location: No Where | I have natural brown hair that is very dull. I have been coloring my hair since college. I have had everything from orange to white hair because I color it myself. Totally have it professionally done unless you do your whole head like I do. Which I need to touch up again, my roots are showing. |

Location: WA | I have really dark brown hair and used to get it professionally highlighted. In fact, the girl forgot me one day and it was WHITE. I mean, blonde as blonde can come. We rinsed and then dyed it blonde, which I thought was funny. And it looked really good. I don't think I have any pictures on the computer of it though. I have also gotten red highlights put in and it looks good too. I say go for it!!!! If you hate it just dye over the top of it.... it's not as big a deal for us dark-haired girls as the blondes who go dark! hehe |

Location: Cleveland, GA | i just came back from having mine highlighted .. but my hair is coal black almost and i had one red, one blond, one red , one blond... etc.. i have no problem with the red.. i like it alot.. its seems to be the style now.. turned out pretty good although i had to sit under the dryer forever to lift that dark but it turned out pretty cool....

Location: in the middle of backwoods iowa | I have mine highlighted with bright red and white highlights- very neat contrast but I like my hair a little wild looking. Would probably have green highlights but boss said if I come in like that I go home permantly. I just had it permed with tight spiral curls also for mor contrast.

She just put highlights in mine and she used bleach so it looks blonde. Then she put some light brown coloring in a few more streaks, I like it, but I agree not wanting to spend $100 to do this!! I like the bleach or blond looks on dark hair.....it's very popular around here, young and old!! |

Any suggestions?? I'm a professional Hairstylist. Do a strand test on just a small strip of you hair. If you have dark hair or black, you will need to use at least 30% or 40% peroxide. This will damage your hair some, but so do perms & any chemical work on hair. You will have to bleach out the color of your hair first, then put a toner on it. But ," FIRST", no matter who does it, do a strand test to see how your hair will respond to the chemical & how light it will bring it up to. The good thing about streaking your hair, it will last a long time & it only dries out a small portion of it. Always use a conditioner after & everytime you put a chemical on your hair. Good luck! |

Location: MT | I have dark brown hair too. I've always had it done professionally so I guess that is the route I would advise. Right now I have carmel color highlights along with some burgundy highlights on the top. I was unsure at first but the contrast really turned out good. My hair dresser usually goes with a Redken color product on me instead of bleach and I haven't had any problem wth them not being light enough or turning brassy or red. My hair sounds a lot like yours because it is dark but bleaches out in the sun (mostly around my face) and has a reddish tone to it too. |

Just a tip on finding a good hairstylist: Look for one that is booked up most of the time, make an appointment as far ahead of time as it takes for her to do your hair, the good ones are always booked. Also find one that has hair that looks great on her & be sure she fixed her own hair, Ask "HER" in the shop so she has to tell the truth! If you have long hair, find one that has long hair too & you like the way she does her hair. |

Location: Wisconsin | I love this topic because I change the color of my hair more than anything. I am naturally a blonde but have done everything from deep deep auburn very dark chocolate brown. I always have at least three colors woven in to compliment each other so it doesn't look so striking. Also gives it a more natural look. I also have my eyebrows done as well. My suggestion is definately have a pro do it because if you screw up it will cost you twice as much to have them fix it! Have fun and get CRAZY!!! |

| Yes, have a professional do it!!! The at home stuff works well with my hair, but my Daughters?? I turned it ORANGE once, had to wear a ball cap to school the next day until we could get to the Beauty shop that afternoon. It's funny now!!! But not at the time!! |

| I always do my own, my hair is med to dark brown. Start at the front and go backwards, and just in case it's not the color you want buy a "wash" to go with it. Then if it's orange or something you can put on the "washes out in 24 washes" over it and it usually looks great. Also, it doesn't really wash out all the way as your hair is now bleached and soaks up the wash color. So I do a highlight and then if its too bright I do the wash over it and it looks great. I am using that new one that comes in a white and green oval box with it's own brush looking thing, with my long hair I use it ALL and it's worked pretty good. Just go easier than you think you need to, as a little goes a long way..... |
