yall, we found this gash, really kinda a hole, last night where it looks like Paint ran into something... I could stick my finger in it about 1 inch. didn't take her to vet, put nitrofurazine on/in it. Ok. Not lame, no significant heat. Upper thigh, right where her left front leg joins her chest. can't wrap it. Looks like something just poked iinto her.

Ok, so today I'm trying to figure what she would have run into, it would have to be something poking out (unles she fell onto something). We have barbwire fence, can't think of any pokey stuff.

this morning i thought- could it be a bullet? But she isn't lame. I know the right thing is to take her to the vet, but...

what do you think?

When in doubt take her to the vet. Puncture wounds can be nasty, you never know what entered the wound. At the very least I'd flush it really good and give a tetanus and antibiotic.

Horses don't have thighs in the front.   They have a forearm.

I would say call your vet to have it looked at.  S/he will advise how to care for it.

ok, thanks for advice.  We don't have t-posts, just wire attached to 4x4 wood posts.  Nothing that I can think of or find that "sticks out" (unless a tree limb in on the ground & she fell on it), but who knows what these horses can get into?  Nothing in our barn, it is a Barnmaster model.

Of course, you are right, we will probably wind up at the vet's, I usually do.  Got one at Thoni's right now that has been there a week...  Oh the joys.

I would take her to a vet to make sure that there isn't any debris in there. i.e. splinters etc. If she hasn't had her tetnus shot better get one of those two. The vet can get you some stuff to flush it out. Now that I have said all that when we were at cow camp I had a mare run into somthing and put a big hole in her shoulder. It would take us 2 1/2 hours to get to town. So I took a long cotton swab doused it with iodine and swirled it around in the hole. Healed up with no problems.

Let me tell you about my son-in-law's horse.  He was so sick they had to put him down.  When they did an autopsy, they found a piece of chain embedded in his hip.  While it had healed over, it still continued to be infected.  The infection is what did him in.  They figure that the brush hog had thrown the metal.

I'd sure take that horse to the vet ASAP.
