Hi everyone! I have a 6yo gelding that I had to rush to the vet on Monday. Actually it is my bb namesake. The vet said he has pnumonia and is almost positive that he has a guttural pouch infection, but he has been unable to scope him because of his air passages being too inflamed. The vet assures me that he will recover but that it will take a while. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do? How much recovery time are we talking about? Advice and stories would be appreciated.

Hmm, this vaguely rings a bell, like maybe strangles?  I'm sure someone else can give you better info.

There is a gob of information on the web about guttoral pouch infections. Untill your vet is able to scope your horse, there is really no way to tell, it is just speculation IMO. Sometimes Guttoral pouch infections are difficult to treat and they have to drain the infection site. Not fun and can be expensive, others resolve with simple anitbiotic treatment. Look on the web for more information. Two years ago my vet thought my mare had the same thing, but after he scoped her we found out it was just a sinus infection and allergies.
