| Has anyone had any stiffness issues with their horses following the shots--a few people around here have noticed signifigant stiffness in the neck and forearm following the shot--fort dodge-- if so what did you do to treat it? |

Location: Illinois | Two years ago, my mare (we think, because the vet won't say thats what it was) had a reaction to the 1st west nile shot. She ran a fever and she had a hard time moving her back end. Vet gave her shots (of what I can't remember) and we layed her off a couple of weeks. She was fine after that and didn't have a reaction to the 2nd shot or last years booster. (hasn't had the booster yet this year) |

Location: Here | I didn't have any problems with the single shot. But the combos I saw had some problems. |

Location: Okla | I gave the 4- way, FT Dodge. and the Rhino and Flu and a Rabies. Big mistake, My gelding was so sore and stiff ,he would not let me even touch him. layed him off for 2 days and then massaged neck and rode lightly today ,i think he will be ready to run Sat. You have to be albe to allow several days off after giving shots. I,m not sure which one made him so sore but shouldn't have given all a once anyway.I have heard from others thier vets are not recommending the WN combo. |

Location: Illinois | I was just going to post on this topic. I had my shots done on Friday last week. Within 2 hours my mare was extremely stiff in her hind end dragging her back feet wouldn't eat and acted like she wanted to colic (pawing at the ground, etc..). This was about 5 or 6 p.m. I stayed out with her until like 11:30 p.m. and she finally started eating some hay. Between this time she had pooped and peed, so I didn't think she was colicing. She was stiff in her neck also (also had a knot). All she got was her west nile and 5 way. She's been getting both for 3-4 years, so it's not the first time she had gotten either one. She's better finally, but still maybe a little stiff to one side of her neck. I just laid her off for awhile and didn't do much with her, but let her out in the pasture. |

Location: Nebraska | I gave the combo and didn't have any problems. Still watching my old horse though as I just gave it to him last night. I had trouble with the first shot on a horse that had apparently just started getting WN symptoms. He was fine that morning. Gave him the shot and an hour later he was trying to die on me... Gave him the second shot and he was fine, gave him the booster the next year and he was fine. The gal that has him now gave him the combo this year and he was fine. |

Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | I was swearing up and down earlier that I was not going to give the WNV shot this year to anything, then talked to the vet when I was in there on somthing else and kind of had decided I would go ahead.... now here are more problems!!! I just do not know what to do!! |

Location: Nebraska | Another thing to remember is that when you give shots in the neck, the serum sits in the pocket for a little while before moving through the system. You can overload this area.... When you give your shots if you are giving more than one in the same area, be sure to massage that area and help get that fluid flowing. I hadn't really thought about this till I became an equine massage therapist. My vet/chiro confirmed this also. |

Location: In the box... | My family has a horse that within a week of getting the WNV shot, it bagan loosing weight and looking 30 years old. Has yet to recover. The vet thinks that it had a condition or a cyst somewhere that with the little bit that a WNV shot brings the horse down, it allowed it to take over. Basically, we have been waiting for the horse to die. There is nothing they can do for it without spending thousands of dollars. |

Location: Georgia | Another point...my insurance co included a WN information sheet in the renewal, stating something like now that there's a vaccine, you best use it bc we won't pay if your horse dies from it...well okay, it wasn't worded exactly like that but that's how I interpreted it. So, you risk your horse having terrible effects from the shot and you also risk your horse getting terribly sick and possibly dying if infected with WN and your insurance co not paying |

Location: Utah | I always light exercise & massage my horses after giving any shots. I think this helps. We vaccinated our 7 horses last night and made sure all of them got some kind of exercise. We'll see if they are sore at all today. |

Location: Here | Another precaution I did was put my horses on the immune builder from SLH for 3 day prior to shot and kept them on it for 10 days after. |

| We got our vacs from the vet last week but have not given them yet. Do most of you give the WNV vacs alone or do you give the all in ones?? (I think it is the 4-way)?? |

Location: relocated to Texas | This topic has been discussed before. Before deciding to give the shot, it might be a good idea to read the other posts as well. Seems like there are a lot problems with this WN shot. Reporst of mares aborting, studs going sterile, muscle stiffness and even some horses getting WN because of the shot! I personally have my horses on an immume building program. (The Dynamite program.) Have never given the shot and don't intend to. I think the risk of getting WN is far less than the risk of the vaccine. I would ask the question; Why isn't there a shot for people? People are prone to getting WN as well. It is because the standards for testing are higher for humans, I'm sure. They came out with this vaccine way too fast for my level of comfort. Of course the vets will tell you to give it. It's all about the $$$$$. |
