Location: Oklahoma | Do you all every feel torn between what races to enter? I am really torn as to wether I should chase points in the 4 associations I have joined (I know - that is too many) or if I should go after the larger added money races. The larger added money races have higher entry fees, stall fees and more travel expenses. But, they offer higher payouts! But, I could stick closer to home and try to win a year end saddle and prizes. Not as much money to win, but lower entry fees and fewer travel expenses! But, you have to go to all of them if you are chasing points! I am so torn on what to do! |

Location: Oregon | yeah I hate that delima ...... but with the uncertainty of the D's (unless yours is a for sure 1D) and the price of fuel, etc I am choosing closer to home. Until mine decide to break out and be all they can be!!! |

Location: southeast KS | My plan is to stay home and go to the shows here. I'm just adding speed to my horse this year. Last year we went and did things correct, so this year we have that down and can work on going faster. I am going to go to the state finals, I realize I'll probably be donating my $$$'s but I want to play too. If it goes well then we'll see about entering another "bigger show" later on. I know I don't want to put too much pressure too fast, I have a nice horse have taken this much time getting him to this point. So why blow it now? JMO

| I just got a new horse and am having the same problems, somewhat. She is a 1D horse, but we need to learn how to work together, I am staying close to home most of the time and saving money and occasionally, I will venture farther out to some bigger runs, with the higher entry fees and money added. |

Location: Georgia | Fuel Prices are killing me. Oh, and the WPRA rules...once you fill a permit, you have to buy another permit or go ahead and buy your card. Why buy your card practically in the middle of the season after the big money FL rodeos (I'm in the Southeast) and why buy another permit? It stinks. Back when my husband filled his permit (eons ago) they could just keep rodeoing on their original permit unless they wanted to buy their card. I went ahead and bought my IPRA card so that I can still rodeo and will buy my card at the beginning of the new rodeo year. You hate to quit while your horse is really working but it's crazy all the $$$$ we're spending on fuel...I have to ask myself is it REALLY worth it? |

Location: At The End of The Red Dirt Road | I don't compete alot myself, but have a daughter who was going to high school rodeos and a son who college rodeos... as far as the high school - she had to miss several rodeos when we moved last fall, so we went to three this spring and just have decided it is not worth the expense! I think she was trying so hard to get back into the top 10 that she was making herself make mistakes! We are going to take the summer off and rope with the guys and work on a young horse we have that we hope will be her college barrel horse. Also, we have three horses that generally run 3D - like someone else said, the only guarantee of a check is if you are the one leading the 1D and that is where she wants to be! We have pretty much decided to sell several finished horses - (ropers and barrel horses) - and prospects so that we can concentrate on the one we think might make it - then if he doesn't we will be in a position financially to go buy a top notch horse. |

Location: AR/OK State Line | I am trying not to join so many associations this year with the prices of fuel and such. That way I don't end up chasing points and can just go where and when I feel like going. My 1D horsegot hurt a few months ago. She used to pay the way for the rest of the trailer. With the 4D's being such a gamble I am staying closer to home and making more money with my inconsistent bunch. I have actually gotten spoiled. If it is out of my three hour raidus I am like na that is too far to drive!!!

Location: Oklahoma | I have gone to Tunica to the Sam's Town Shootout the past two years and have always had a blast. But, dang, by the time you pay the entry, the stall fee, the processing fee, purchase the manditory shavings, not to mention the travel expenses, lodging, food and gambling money (who is not going to gamble at least a little) you have spent what money you might win. There are so many added money races any more that I would rather go to with one horse, but the other one is not ready for that kind of pressure yet. So, I guess we will just take them as they come. But, man, I really do like having a shot at the larger payouts. It has really been tough making up my mind before the pre-entry deadlines! Thanks for letting me know I am not just being neurotic and you all have these decisions too! |
