I've been out of the game for almost a decade and just began horse shopping. Curious what everyone is feeding their performance horses these days?
The choices are many and opinions strong!
I'm feeding beet pulp shreds, Unbeetable Complete, Renew Gold and alfalfa hay. Fat and fiber, low to no sugar food. My baby is growing big and strong, elders and broodmare look great, competition horse is always full of energy without being any hotter than a horse named Demon is going to be (the Demon part is from her younger days, she's not as much of a Demon anymore).
Chewy is my new best friend. Feed is delivered to my garage door. That's probably new in the past decade.
Hay, Renew Gold when in work, and mineral. As the young ones get in heavier work we will reassess, but yhr 4 y/o is hotter so will probably stick with higher fat/protein feeds vs high sugar/starch feeds.
I feed all of my horses Hygain.
My mare is doing really well on quality hay with a ration balancer. Right now I'm feeding Omneity from Mad Barn because I want her vitamins and minerals covered without piling on extra calories. We're in the middle of the 2026 competition season and she's holding her condition well, staying consistent, and I like that she gets the nutrients she needs without getting hot or overly wound up. For barrel horses that's a big deal, since the last thing I want is extra energy turning into unnecessary excitement.
