To start off, I use to barrel race at rodeos while younger. Literally like 17 years ago or so and it was on a friends horse. I would call myself a intermediate rider back then. Long story short, we stopped hanging out and through the years I've rode horses as in trail rides never owned one until over a year ago. Me and my husband have been learning and figuring it out as we go. I have had one mare for the past year by herself and just recently bought a 25 year old ex barrel racing horse. My question is, is she still ok to run barrels? Not rodeo but just around the house. I got on her yesterday and she turns quick as a dime and doesn't act 25. I know I was risking it buying a 25 year old horse and my other one is 16 but I was trying to find something that my kids and husband could learn on. (I was told she is beginner safe and fine as long she doesn't see the barrel pattern lol). Still new to everything so positive opinions only please.
