Been riding barrels for going on 15 years and I've seen a lot of folks drop serious money on the wrong saddle because they didn't know what to look for. Figured I'd put together what I actually pay attention to when I'm evaluating a saddle. TREE WIDTH is everything. This is where most people go wrong. A saddle that's too narrow pinches right behind the shoulder blades and kills your horse's movement. Too wide and it'll rock forward and bridge across the back. When in doubt, get your horse's back traced with a wire form before you order custom. SEAT SIZE — don't size down. A lot of riders think they need to go smaller to feel the horse better. In reality a seat that's too small throws you behind the motion. Measure from the back of the cantle to the front of the swells while seated — you want about 4 fingers of clearance. HORN HEIGHT matters for your style. Low horn if you like to reach forward around the barrels. Taller horn gives you something to brace against but can catch your hand if you're not used to it. WEIGHT is underrated. Shaving 2-3 lbs off your saddle adds up over a long barrel season, especially on a shorter-backed horse. RIGGING position — full, 7/8, or 3/4 changes how the saddle sits on different builds. Mutton-withered horses usually do better in 7/8. I put together a more detailed side-by-side breakdown of different saddle types and what horse/rider builds they match best here: https://chuteside.polsia.app/guide/barrel-racing-saddles Happy to answer questions — what saddles is everyone running right now?
