Location: Down South | Possible abscess starting. Getting all this second hand from my daughter as I'm still at the hospital with my mom. We got his shoes pulled Wednesday and trimmed. Daughter says he's very gimpy and hoof has heat in it. Could this be abscess starting or just a bruise.? I know it's just best guess. But what is best home remedy to draw out an abscess.?
Thanks, LJP |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | We stuck a soaking boot on 3 times a day. Soaked with warm water and epsom salt. They have "packing" that will help. But the soaking worked best for us. My mares abscess ended up plowing out the back of her heel, and I'm not sure a pack would have helped. Someone will probably attach a link to an older thread, as there was a ton of info on it. |

| soak in epsom salt,
then make a nice mix of Ichthammol & Poultice, pack the hoof with it, Wrap the hoof ( we use a diaper and some duct tape ) and wait.....
edited to add - I usually change it once a day, when i change it, i clean the hoof and then soak & wrap... usually takes about 3 days.

Location: mi | I would just bute for a few days. With it being less then 48 hours out from shoes pulled and a trim. My guess would be the shoer was alittle too agressive and he is just tender soled from too much being taken down with removal of shoes.
edited to add that normally with sole tenderness it is both feet not just one. If it is just one I would wrap with some abcess concoction I make that was posted on this board. I never bother to soak anymore just pack and wrap up for a couple days and bam it's usually gone.

| No bute - it delays the abscess popping out. Pack with ichthamol, furacin, and triple antibiotic ointment, cover with gauze, wrap, and then duct tape. Change daily and it will blow out if that is what it is. Good luck. |

| Use the recipe that is on the sticky at the top of the forum. No soaking needed. If it's an abcess, it will pull it out. If it's not an abcess, no harm will be done. |

Location: SE Louisiana | With heat in the foot you're prolly talking abscess. treat as advised and get him someplace without rocks. Maybe a stall.. |
