Location: Silver Lake, MN | My mare I just got bascially filet her left hind leg open all down the front of her cannon bone to the bone. Has anyone had an injury this severe that healed up and they were sound? I am trying to keep my hopes up at this point and would love to hear your experiences. I will get pictures tonight. |

| I had my mounted shooting prospect cut her fetlock into the joint capsule. I sprayed it with vetrocyn gel and wrapped it daily until it the wound stayed closed. She cut it in August and it finally healed enough to turn her back out by November. She is perfectly sound with a small scar. Her fetlock is a little bigger but it's reduced in size considerably.
It's going to take some time and she may have a wicked scar but with proper care there is a good chance she will be sound. Good luck. |

Location: north dakota | I had one that did that to her front leg. It was about 8 inches or so long, down to the bone and the stiches that I had the vet do didn't hold. It healed up to the point you had to look for the scar a few years later. It all depends on what was injured. There was not any damage to the tendons or ligaments in my horses injury.
I used apple cider vinager and sugar and bandaged it. Washed off all of the exudate every time I changed the dressing.

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | Vetericyn gel works wonders...it'll keep it clean and keep bacteria out and speed healing with increased blood flow...I'm always amazed at what it can do ...I've used it on some nasty wounds and it healed perfectly..
Also if its down to the bone you'll need some antibiotics from the vet for at least 5 if not 10 days just to make sure no infection gets in the bone....uniprim is usually what mine prescribes for dirty wounds...

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I had a filly scrape hers to the bone, it was several yrs ago and she healed fine. Proud flesh seemd to be the hardest thing to keep away, but she was sound and just had a scar. I would think there is plenty of hope that she will be sound. |

Location: Lost in the corn of Iowa. | My mare was attacked by a dog and run through a fence, this happened before I got her but I know the story. She sliced her right hind wide open on the front side of the leg just below the hock all the way down to the fetlock joint. It healed wonderfully, she has an ugly scar but that's it. She is sound on the leg, the only issue I have is she doesn't like any boots or polos on that leg when we run. I think the sand and dirt and maybe sweat just irritate the heck out of the scar. We're clocking in the 4D and keep getting better. |

Two years ago my finished mare did this exact same injury. She was at a rodeo and another horse kicked her, she retaliated, missed that horse and hit a cattle panel instead. My picture could substitute perfectly for this one.
UNDERWOODS. I can not say enough super positive things about it. She is sound, running, and normal. It took a bit for the granular tissue to fill in - we're talking a couple months. She was sound the entire time and we started bringing her back with vet wrap around the wound to keep the dirt out after 1.5 months.
