Extreme Veteran Posts: 396 Location: Iowa	Hey Everyone! So I am asking for help because I am coming to the conslusion that it must be my fault. My two barrel horse are starting to loose it when it it comes to finishing the barrel. Both are starting to step out and loose collectivness to try and joult off 3rd barrel only. I do alot of slow work to keep them collected, flexed at the poll and over emphazies my finishing but during a run I am still not finishing it right. Any advice on what you guys do to keep them finsihing nicely?

Expert Posts: 2685	I know this is not what you want to hear but a video of each horse work help a ton. I'm thinking it's your muscle memory riding. I think you ride fine for slow work because you are paying attention but when you speed up go back to the same old habit that is causing the problem.

Expert Posts: 2604 Location: Texas	Sounds to me like they are not rating for the turn and then trying to take off running for home before they have completely finished the turn. Focus on rating for the turn first, stay sitting completly thru the turn, complete it and then think about hustling them home.

The Bling Princess Posts: 3411 Location: North Dakota	If you can't finish it correctly it makes me wonder what your approach to the turn looks like. Are you starting the turn too soon? Are they not shaping and cutting you off? If they cut you off they have to step off on the back side to compensate. A video would be nice in this situation if you have one:)

Own It and Move On Location: The edge of no where	Just a guess - but are you anticipating them not completing the turn and maybe hanging on their heads a bit? Are you leaning? How is the approach? Is the turn itself snappy?

Expert Posts: 1611	You are probably laying them out going into the third. They have no choice but to fall in because they cannot collect up and actually turn because you did not go straight in and rate them for the turn. You laid them out and pulled....forcing them to drop in and slung their butts not being collected. Go straight, slow down and turn the barrel.

Drive them one step further up into the turn and then allow him to come around. On the second video he takes a step off which means he has to reach for the turn too far and he becomes stretched out and uncollected and then pops up out of the turn. For both of them you have to think straighter longer; no turning too soon and no stepping off the turn:)

That's making him start to turn to soon and what I call "be out of turn" before you are around the barrel. Stay 2 handed longer, when you get there sit hard, drop to 1 hand and look up. Your turning to soon making him turn too soon. Nice horse! 2nd video your approach is what got you. It wasn't horrible but I think if you would have had just a touch more rate he could have went ahead and came around it a little further. I think his momentum running around it instead of planting around it made him truck along without your say so to continue. Not that running around one is bad but with a little more rate even on the backside I think he could have come on around it. He looks like a big guy and just had a lot behind him lol. Another really nice horse!!

Or if that particular horse doesnt need much pocket then you just need to ride a half stride deeper. I see that someone said you are dropping your hand to soon and going to one rein. I ride one handed to the 3rd, but I also work my horse one handed so that she knows what I am asking in a run. (That was taught to me by Ed Wright) Your second video looks like you are giving to much pocket and not really asking the horse to rate. You may need to slow down for a few runs and get your pocket and rate right before asking for more speed.
