| Sunday evening my 18 yr old competition gelding came in from the pasture with a scratch on his leg I clean it up but it was very little so I didn't think anything else about it two days later his leg was completely swollen! From ankle to above his knee call the vet she came out the next morning and tells me about cellulitis (not shur if I'm spelling that right) gives him a sweat wrap with furazone and dsmo antibiotics and bute! Stall bound for at least a week! |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | My heart totally goes out to you. Years ago, my mare had a slightly swollen back leg. I could not find a mark on her except for a VERY small pin hole. I hosed the leg and turned her back out thinking the swelling would go down on its own. I was not overly concerned about it. The next day, her leg was HUGE and she was lame. When my vet got there, she was not happy with me and I felt like the worst horse owner ever. The leg ended up busting open and it was a huge and costly experience. To say the least I learned a lot. The mare still swells up sometimes in the summer and the moment I notice it, I run a course of antibiotics, hose, wrap and stall rest her. It appears to do the trick within a day or two. I never want to go through all the doctoring again.
The course of action you are taking, sounds like the right one. If you notice any change, I would contact your vet immediately and don't be afraid to ask questions.
I sincerely hope your horse heals quickly

Location: La | Had a mare with a scratch on her leg. Ended up with swollen hock. Needless to say, 2 weeks at the vets, shockwave therapy, wrapping with DMSO, and 2 years later....still swollen. Cellulitis was the diagnosis. Prayers for you to have better luck!! |

Location: Here | Having had it myself in my own leg twice, antibiotics is what I would discuss with the vet. I know I would not have wanted anything hot on my leg. I lived in my 3n1 wraps and good probiotics and antibiotics. I sometimes wonder if the things we do to our horses would we do to ourselves... |
