| Went to ride my horse and discovered an access looking swollen spot on his elbow. He's not lame on it, looks like he's been biting at it as there is a small open sore - about the size of a softball. Not affecting his appetite, but he is more skittish than normal. He lets me touch it and doesn't flinch. Pretty confident (after my google research) it's a shoe boil or capped elbow. Of course this happens a week before we leave for a vacation. Vet is on her way ... just curious whether anyone has had any experience with this. TIA

| Horses usually seem to either get them, or not get them. Hopefully yours is a fluke, and won't return. I would neglect doing anything, until it looked infected. They make a gizmo, that goes around their ankle that's supposed to prevent them. If I had access to one, I'd probably stick it on, til the fluid was reabsorbed. |

| I had a horse that would get a shoe boil about every 3-4 years, my vet would drain it, shot of cortisone in it, then put a small flexible tube through two slits and tie it. He said that was to keep it irritated so it would heal.
Can't remember but I think we put him on antibiotics. Anyway after it was drained he would be fine, I would start riding him the next day. The tube would stay in there about a month and I would wash it everyday and moved tube around every time I was around him. One time I had a different vet in a different town take care of it and he didn't put the tube in, took forever for it to heal and my horse was very sore. I was off him for over a month! |

Location: Arkansas | Dealing with this now. My vet gave mixture of Furason, DMSO, and steroid to me and I've been putting it on daily. He said he prefers not to inject; all I know is the swelling is down almost completely and it is "mushy" now instead of hard, so I'm very pleased!! |

Thanks for asking
After an overall assessment the vet said no shoe boil. She said it looked like a one time trauma injury like he might have gotten kicked. However, he had a small puncture wound ... about the size of a pencil eraser. Since he doesn't share a pasture with anyone, we think he may have been messing around with the horse in the pasture next to him and was rearing and got his leg caught. I've seen him do this at a friends house when I turned him out into the arena.
Treatment with keeping the wound clean, alu-shield, DMSO to bring the swelling down and a few days of bute. No riding until swelling has completely subsided.
Trying not to be negative and I realize it could have been much much worse .... but I just can't seem to get to a barrel race anymore.

Here's hoping for quick recovery and more barrel races than you can shake a stick at!!!! |
